Poems are very important in our everyday life because they increase our critical thinking skills due to thinking a lot while analyzing poems. They also increase our happiness when going through the message they convey. Before analyzing poems, you must be familiar with different terms like and help us mood, imagery, simile, and metaphor. I am going to discuss and analyze on three poems about fathers which are: “My Papa’s Waltz,” by Theodore Roethke; “Those Winter Sundays,” by Robert Hayden; and “My Father’s Hat,” by Mark Irwin.
“My Father’s Hat,” by Mark poem was about the son who spoke indifferently to his father due to the fact he disturbed him while he was sleeping. This poem is about a child who was thinking about the good time he will spend with his missed father. This is because in the poem there is where the author said” where I would smell his hair and almost think I was being held, or climbing a tree, touching the yellow fruit,” (Irwin, 2004). This shows good time the child will have after meeting with his father. The mood of the poem is joyful because the author showed the joyful moments the child will have when he found her father such as touching the yellow fruit smelling his hair, thinking of his fabulous sleep. (Irwin, 2004). The do mood, imagery and simile/metaphor used in this poem impact me because they encouraged thinking deeply about the message the author wanted to communicate. For instance, the metaphor was used in this poem where the author said, “Hymning through the pines, the musky scent of the rain “(Irwin, 2004).
