“Hope when you take that jump, you don’t fear the fall. Hope when the water rises, you built a wall.” In both A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah and “I Lived” by OneRepublic an important message prevails; take risks without hesitation, but be ready for all that may come of it. To me, this is song represents living life to the fullest, no matter what your situation is. “I Lived” reminds me that life goes on, and will never come again. Also, you have to truly be present in everything you do. For Ishmael, I pity him, but this would be an excellent song for someone in his position. “With every broken bone, I swear I lived.” This song would advise him to stay positive and be brave, he will survive. “I Lived” by OneRepublic is a ray of positivity …show more content…
Originally, Tedder wrote the song as a paternal love letter to his young son, Copeland. The song was written to remind people to embrace every aspect of life, despite what they may be going through; life is precious. Next, the music video was dedicated to a young OneRepublic fan living with cystic fibrosis, giving the song an additional purpose. In said video the fan is seen journeying, despite being terminally ill and struggling. “I Lived” continues to inspire millions of people every day. Finally, OneRepublic went on to remix “I Lived” donating all profit towards a global effort to cure malaria, AIDS, and tuberculosis. This song is extremely important to me because it is such a wakeup call. On November 25, 2015, I listened to “I Lived” for the first time, the day after my first breakup. I felt sour and isolated, like my life was in vain. “I Lived” helped me to understand that everyone has problems, what matters is how we react; one can either sit around and feel sorry for himself, or get up and cherish their fortuities. This song that aided in my return to happiness. In the end we will only regret the time we wasted being sad. “I Lived” is so important because it conveys the importance of loving

To “live” means to wake up every morning, to experience life to its fullest, and to stay true to your values and what you stand for. There are many things that can contribute to the quality of life, for example, love, knowledge, hatred, war, family, and anything else that can alter the experience or values of life. Courage Nelson Mandela once stated that, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it”. In Ernst Gaines’ novel, “A Lesson Before Dying”, the most important lesson to learn before dying is courage. The novel shows this through the characters Tante Lou, Miss. Emma, and Jefferson. First of all, Tante Lou shows courage by being with Miss. Emma, working hard to get Grant through university, and she believes God will help everything.…

While I was reading the touching and true story of the life of Ishmael Beah, a child soldier in the Sierra Leonean war, I was able to understand how much hope Ishmael had in order to survive. Each and every day, Ishmael believed in the idea of a better future for himself and his friends. Without this strong belief, Ishmael wouldn’t have had the strong resolve to survive and to never give up on life. Basically, one significant message of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah is to never give up on hope and to believe that there will always be a better future in life. One key passage in the novel is “When I was very little, my father used to say, ‘If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen.…

Survival is one motif because Ishmael, the main character, is motivated to survive as he witnesses many horrific events. “All the captives stood at gunpoint watching as the rebels proceeded to interrogate the old man” (Beah, 2007, p.g. 32). Ishmael constantly ran away from the rebels to hide. He had to escape the rebels and have hope that he would find a safe place or his family again.…

In an interview, author of A Long Way Gone and former child soldier Ishmael Beah said “Everyone is capable of going beyond their own humanity and doing certain things that are not humane” (Beah). In A Long Way Gone the events that occur in young Beah’s life force him to commit acts that many believe they never could do no matter the circumstance. Beah believes that in a certain situation anyone can be forced into making choices that may look like a lack of humanity. He says that “People if they have been touched by war or conflicts that make them be a part of, participate in committing atrocities would be victims of it” and that “this is also part of human nature if you’re in that circumstance you would act that way as well so it’s not just specific, particular to who live in Africa or people who live in Asia who do these things” (Beah).…

Near the beginning of the novel, Ishmael acknowledges false hope, and just how much that false hope can help someone escape a dangerous situation. “Perhaps it was necessary that he cling to false hopes, since they kept him running away from harm” (Beah, 13), is what Ishmael thinks when he sees a father running away from the rebels while carrying his son in his arms. However Ishmael fails to recognize his own false hopes in the idea that his family was still all alive and well. This false hope is what kept him going throughout the tough situations he was placed in. Once Ishmael discovered his hopes were in fact false and that his family had died, his mental health and spirit declined rapidly.…

Ishmael by Daniel Quinn is a book which discusses many things, most specifically how humans see and treat the world around them. The book categorizes humans into two distinct categories, takers and leavers. There are many themes which are used throughout the book, such as captivity, identity, and evolution. One of the most important things discussed throughout the book is the environment, how humans treat it and how the takers are destroying the world through knowing nothing about it. This book has many parts of it that make it interesting to read, like the Takers and Leavers, all the different themes, and the discussion Ishmael has about the environment and how humans treat it.…

In Paul Kalanithi’s memoir When Breath Becomes Air, he teaches the reader that although time is limited and death is inevitable, life can still be meaningful and have a purpose, even if it is as simple as helping an individual find the strength to overcome whatever hardships they may be forced to face. The beginning of the book starts off with Paul reflecting on what death is and what it means. In one event at the beginning of his book, years before being diagnosed with lung cancer, he was working as doctor and helping a pregnant woman who was having distress with her unborn twins. The twins ended up being born prematurely and since there was a lack of development in their organs, neither newborn survived longer than twenty-four hours.…

In Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, “A Psalm of Life”, he expresses two key values: to be zealous about living and to appreciate life in its entirety. From the start of the poem, Longfellow contends that “life is but an empty dream!” and that it is not a fantasy, far-fetched, and difficult to create into a good reality. He believes “the soul is dead that slumbers”, because those souls have lost the motivation for life as they think “the grave is its [ultimate] goal”. I agree with Longfellow with this value, because if a person doesn’t have a passion to live, then he/she won’t have the will to accomplish anything. The passion serves as the hero of a person’s life, and without that passion we will be “like, dumb, driven cattle” who don’t have…
