A Decade of Disillusion
The era that I chose to write about was from 1963 to 1973. I felt that this was the decisively time period in America history. The 60’s were ushered in riding on the coattails of the 1950’s and was felt would carry on the hopes and dreams of the post-WWII economic growth which America was enjoying
. The 1950’s ideas of bliss in suburbia with dinner promptly at 6 and of a mother doing housework in pearls were about to be shattered by the events of the 1960’s. The 60’s brought a changing of the guard in US politics as a young man from Massachusetts set his sights on the highest office in the land and became the 35th President.

The Cuban Missile Crisis as it came to be known as was the closest that the Cold War had come to an actual nuclear assault. Between October 16th and 28th 1962, the whole world collectively held its breath as the events played out. The Soviets insisted that the placement was a direct result of the United States deploying missiles in Italy and Turkey. The festival was originally billed as “An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace and Music”, the event was held on Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm. Promoters had estimated that the crowd for the event would not surpass 50,000 spectators as ticket sales were marginal at best. At times the weather gods were well appeased and the skies were sunny as 32 acts were listed to perform at the festival.
The festival was the brainchild of Michael Lang and Artie Kornfield but was financed by Joel Rosenman and John Roberts. This was originally a for-profit venture with tickets costing $18 in advance and $24 at the gate. The concert promoters were unaware of the influx of advance ticket sales which topped 186,000. The town of Bethel was in no way prepared for the number of attendees to descend upon their sleepy little town the week of August 15th,
