John Maxwell, a well known author on leadership, believes that “leaders must be close enough to relate to others but far enough ahead to motivate them.” Section leaders are the people looked to first for what the band directors want and how they are expected to accomplish those directives. Great section leaders provide clear directions to their section on what is expected of them. Section leaders must be able to relate to, understand, and communicate with both the band directors and their section. Through my experiences in leadership both in and out of school I will be able to lead my section.…

I find that, for me, the personality element within the Right to Lead Model is the most important concept within Module 5, Adaptable Leader. Personality seems to be the most important concept within said model, and the lesson in general, because personality shapes how everything we communicate is perceived by others. This means that every other one of your leadership qualities rely on you having a positive personality in order for you to be effective. Without a well-received personality, even if you are highly skilled in your field and act as a model leader, you will be perceived poorly and everything you do will be tainted. This would cause subordinates, coworkers, and supervisors to avoid dealing with you.…

Working on the HHS Band leadership team has been one of the most difficult but rewarding jobs of my high school career. My junior year I was selected as the clarinet co-section leader with another one of my good friends Laura. Both of us are very strong and confident leaders, so throughout the marching band season, there was a bit of a power struggle. We didn't know how to properly balance our authority in the group to command equal respect, and we didn't know how to work as a team. Through my experiences with Laura, I learned that leadership is so much more than directing a group.…

I have had the privilege to partake in several leadership experiences, but there are a few which stand out from the rest. One has been my participation as a worship leader through my church. I am part of a team that leads the congregation in song. As a lover of music, and a pious christian, this is a particularly salient aspect of my life. By leading through song, I have the opportunity to share the gift of music, worship God in a unique way, and be a leader of people through my strongly entrenched beliefs, which is exceedingly important to me.…
