(Gerber) Physical side effects that change appearance vary from male to female. (Clayton) Females using anabolic steroids typically start to gain a masculine appearance due to: development of facial and body hair, muscles, and a deepened voice. In contrast, males often develop more feminine traits such as a higher voice and breasts along with their more masculine muscles. Teenagers using anabolic steroids will often begin a premature maturation that closes growth plates that leads to stunted growth causing them to be shorter than their peers with age. (Clayton) Many other side effects can become present in both genders. These side effects include: oily skin, acne, and baldness (Gerber) Side effects may be temporary and diminish with the withdrawal of anabolic steroids or may persist through a person’s entire life varying on levels of abuse. (Gerber; MedicineNet) Because of all the changes of features that occur from anabolic steroid in a person, many emotional aspects of life will undergo changes.

This theory suggests that an increase in testosterone during puberty is linked to an increase in aggression. Evidence shows that mice with high levels of administered testosterone show more aggressive behaviour (Bruer et al, 2001). However, this is not applicable to humans so studies carried out on humans have shown that boys show a positive correlation between high levels of testosterone and social aggression but girls do not (Sanchez-Martin et al, 2000). Although most studies show that aggression due to testosterone is mainly linked to males, Cashdan (2003) has shown that women who show competitive aggression have higher levels of testosterone. Further studies carried out on testosterone and cortisol levels have shown that individuals with high testosterone levels were only positively correlated with aggression if they had low cortisol levels (Mehta & Joseph, 2010).…
