Have you ever wanted to get better at something? This is the mindset of most athletes competing in sports. Some athletes use anabolic steroids to boost their performance. These steroids can make you stronger, faster, and better: however, they are banned in almost all sports. Anabolic steroids are often abused by athletes and can lead to negative effects if taken. Athletes in sports are always trying to get better and what they’re competing in, so they turn to anabolic steroids. These anabolic steroids are made of a testosterone which is a male sex hormone (Drug Abuse). The testosterone in anabolic steroids are Anabolic steroids enable athletes to train harder. One way athletes take them is through topical treatments such as ointment and rub on products (PJ, Sydney). This is the least effective way, but is one of the safer ways athletes take them. Another way people can them is orally (PJ, Sydney). Taking them by pills is fairly effective while still being relatively safe. Most prescribed prescriptions by doctors will be through pills or somehow taken orally. The third way anabolic steroids can be taken is through injection (PJ, Sydney). This is the most effective way of taking steroids and transferring testosterone into the muscles and rest of body. Taking anabolic steroids through injection is also a serious risk of getting a sexually transmitted disease like hiv and aids. These can be transmitted from person to person if they use the same needle. Any way they are taken, they are abused by athletes. Athletes take higher doses than prescribed by medical professional which effects can be seen from watching them (PJ, Sydney). Anabolic steroids have been abused the most out of any drug in almost every sport whether they need to gain muscle or cut fat and their users have been caught the most (Berkowitz, Bonnie). Sports are cracking down on using anabolic steroids and athletes are at a bigger risk now while taking them. First, anabolic steroids come with short term effects. These short term effects start with mental problems such as angry feelings (Drug Abuse). The angry feeling people have when they take them promote violence and wanting to do harm.Violent action done by people on steroids is known as “roid rage” (Drug Abuse). Also, after taking steroids for a period of time they may lead to serious long term effects (Drug Abuse). These long term effects can lead to baldness and risk to injury. Where all the muscle was built up from the steroids becomes weak when you discontinue taking them, and can lead that spot to become injury prone. Taking steroids can also cause long term health problems (Drug Abuse). A couple cyclist have died while using steroids because it tends to raise your heart rate and mess with heat regulation (Berkowitz).
