The unauthorized use of anabolic steroids including performance-enhancing drugs are strictly prohibited, regardless of whether they are used during or outside of the sports season. Anabolic steroids are a type of performance-enhancing drug that are synthetic substances related to the male sex hormone testosterone. Anabolic steroids can alter the bodies hormonal balance, and increase the development of male sexual characteristics in males and females with the intent of increasing muscle mass, speed and strength, etc. Anabolic steroids can have many negative effects such as liver and kidney damage, and are a health and safety risk to all student-athletes. To educate and inform all student athletes about the NCAA rules regarding the use of performance-enhancing substances.
The Testing Program:
Drug testing will occur randomly throughout the sports season to test student-athletes for the use of performance-enhancing substances. All student-athletes must be tested annually, and will be unannounced. The student-athlete will be notified by the drug testing administrator 24 hours prior to the urinalysis. The athlete must then sign a document acknowledging the fact he/she was notified, and consent to the drug test, which must be taken within 24 hours following the notification. The laboratory will use a portion of sample A for its initial analysis. Sample B will be tested next if sample A is positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
Notification of Positive Results:
The drug testing administrator will be notified of each positive test. The student-athlete will be notified during a private meeting with the program director and/or sports coach. The student-athlete will be notified in writing of the consequences of the positive test results, and the appeal process. All student-athlete information will be confidential, and will only be released to those individuals who have a legitimate reason to know during this process.
Consequences if Test is Positive:
A student-athlete whose urinalysis is found to contain banned substances, or who refuses to show up for a required drug test will be subject to the following procedures and
