In 1904 Hicks used a mixture of brandy and strychnine, which nearly caused him to die. Athletes used a variety of mixtures that included strychnine, heroin, cocaine, and caffeine. Each athlete or team created their own mixtures until the 1920’s. During the 1920’s heroin and cocaine became available only by prescription (Historical Timeline - Drug Use in Sports 2013, October 8). “Anabolic steroids may aid in the healing of muscle contusion injury to speed the recovery of force-generating capacity. Although anabolic steroids are considered renegade drugs, they may have an ethical clinical application to aid healing in severe muscle contusion injury, and their use in the treatment of muscle injuries” (Beiner, J. 1999). By allowing the athletes to take steroids, the speed of recovery in the muscle will be much greater allowing the muscle to repair. This will allow the athletes to train more and will result in improving their …show more content…
Some of its benefits include increase in physical strength, delay in the onset of fatigue, increase in exercise endurance, and prevention of anxiety that could interfere with performance (Rogol, A., & Yesalis, C. 1992). However, the belief is that all steroid users are “juice heads” and abuse it. Among athletes, steroid abuse has been estimated to be less than six percent. Additionally, people take steroids is to increase their muscle size or to reduce their body fat (Why do people abuse anabolic steroids? 2006, August 1). Several investigators have suggested that some of the alleged ergogenic benefits of Anabolic steroids may develop from their psychological effects; they may lead to stimulation, increased self-confidence, The majority of psychological/behavioral studies have been performed with small numbers of selected athletes. Some data indicate different mood changes after dynamic resistance exercise alone. These responses in mood could be enhanced by athletes taking anabolic-androgenic steroids (Rogol, A., & Yesalis, C. 1992).
Athletes will tell you that say there competitive nature to win every night can be fierce. Performance enhancing drugs have become increasingly common. Using performance-enhancing drugs isn’t without risk. Athletes take anabolic steroids to improve their muscle and strength. Athletes tend to take higher doses then what is prescribed for medical purposes. It is impossible for researchers
