In the article, Catton briefly stated some comparison concerning Lee and Grant, as well. One of the similarities that he mention was they were both determined to end the war peacefully. This comparison can be proven when Catton stated, “To turn quickly from the war to peace once the fighting was over . . . in the end, help the two sections to become one nation again,” concerning Lee and Grant. These quotes support the author believes the main similarities between Lee and Grant was both two strong men physically and mentally to protect their people.…
“We honor our past because it shapes our future,” this is one of the many quotes that Otterbein University holds dearly. Otterbein University holds this value greatly. Otterbein gives equality to all students, faculty, and others since 1847. Before any women’s rights and the abolishment of slavery, Otterbein University allowed people of color and women to receive a fair and equal education. Otterbein University is a mid-sized college located in Westerville, Ohio.…
“For us today, Indian removal may well retain its moral simplicity, but the issue as it unfolded was exceedingly complex. Not all white Americans supported Cherokee removal; not all Cherokees opposed it; and the drama itself took place against a complicated backdrop of ideology, self-interest, party politics, altruism, and…
In Bill McKibben’s article, “Why Dakota Is the New Keystone,” McKibben expresses through vivid word choice, aggressive tone, and sentence structure, why the New Keystone should be in the Dakota’s. He brings together these elements to paint a vivid picture to persuade the reader into believing it too. McKibben uses words that clearly show what he wants the reader to picture and shows how he wants to shape this piece. He illustrates this by stating that there are “shocking images of the National Guard destroying tepees and sweat lodges and arresting elders” (McKibben).…
In the poetry collection Whereas by Layli Long Soldier, there is a intense division between Native American tribes and The United States government. In 2009, in an attempt to rectify this divide, the United States Congress issues an apology on to all the tribes they wronged. Long Soldier, a Lakota woman uses the entire second half of her novel to rebuke an apology she deems inadequate. Initially when analyzing her writing, it seems nonsensical and unorganized. This collection disrupts typical conventions of writing to illustrate the nonsensical manner in which the Congressional Apology was written and delivered.…
Battle over land ownership and the movement of the Native American’s off of their land is part of the American story. As whites moved across America, the Indians were moved to less desirable land. In the two essays that I wrote for this class, Kaw People and Absentee Landowners the interesting connection between both essays is that not only were the Indians moved off the land but settlers and their descendants who wanted the land were priced out of the land in Chase County. Both essays are connected by the simple fact that as land became more valuable only the most powerful or richest could own the land and as a result both the Kaw and people of Chase County have became more dependent on others for support.…
The interwoven nature of Native American relationships with the White men created a perplexing dynamic, with an unyielding spirit both within the invaded and the invaders, throughout the entirety of the two’s interaction. Like most history, this story could be told through multiple lens, whether it be trade relationships or military motives, however Stuart Banner chooses to drive this narrative with attention to the means of which Indians and white Americans exchange land. In his rendering of this story, How the Indians Lost Their Land: Law and Power on the Frontier, Banner contends that most all of the land transactions between Indians and white Americans lie on a spectrum which include law and power on both ends as extrema. Banner remarks,…
Indeed, quiz show provides a feeling of everyone has equal opportunities to win no matter what job, talent, class, gender or race they are through doing same quizzes. As Holmes has argued about Fiske's explanation of games and rituals, games separate out winners from contestants as different, but rituals bringing different individuals in same levels and implying commonality (2008, p.93). In Mastermind, rituals fill in that idea by reducing individual's differences and make them compete at same starting line as equal competitor. For example, the host askes each contestant's name, job and the specialist area they choose to do the quiz before they start to answer, and tells competitors that each of them have equal time to answer the quizzes which…
On the other hand, the distributed self would suggest that how people experience the world and make sense of it is primarily a result of socio-cultural processes, which varies over time and space. Constructionists conceptualize depression as an identity continually renegotiated via linguistic exchange and social performance. They would argue that the biological attitude excludes the social and linguistic dimensions of experience from consideration; social constructionist perspective is essential to understand how subjectivity and meaning are constructed in language and social interaction. For example I will briefly discuss the argument of gender differences in depression and how social constructionists consider that through looking at the ‘material discursive’ practices it is the pressures of society, which causes depression. They argue that a certain pressure is thrust upon women to be doing activities that fits the ideology of being a ‘good woman’ this can exhaust the woman’s body therefore causing depression.…
Laura E. Waltar Mrs. Hesse Cornerstone English 3 29 Nov. 2015 Just Go Don’t we all want to just go and explore? Commonly heard echoing through the halls of high school is the desire, the cry, to get out. Young people often just want to leave: to experience something new and unexpected, to find adventures and make memories, and to explore more of the world.…
The Supreme Court, as Justice Madison puts it, is the Supreme interpreter of the law, and all laws that are not constitutional must be strike down. Brandeis also thinks this way. He thinks the interpreter of the law has supervisory powers. They must be impartial and not allow a citizen or government official to break the law. If citizens break the law, then the appropriate punishment applies according to the statutes; however, if the government breaks the law, then sanctions applies to uphold the integrity of the law.…
The quality of life is best defined as the general well-being of individuals and societies. John A. Robertson argues that infants are persons, but believes we have no obligation to treat defective infants. Also, we have H. Tristram Engelhardt, Jr. who argues that infants are not persons, and believes there is a duty not to treat them if treatment prolongs a painful life. Altogether, Robertson and Engelhardt both have different views of the quality of life one possesses. John A. Robertson rejects the claim that infants are not persons.…
In the book “Trail of Tears: The Rise and fall of the Cherokee Nation” a book where more than 18,000 Indians were forced to move to Oklahoma in a march known as The Trail of Tears, John Ehle explains with details all the events that led to this happening. In the book we learn a lot from the Cherokee nation which was one of the most important tribes at that time. There are also many characters discussed in this book, like the life of major Ridge who was one of the most well known and important leaders of the Cherokee tribe and played a major role during the negotiations of the white men and Cherokees trying to fix their issues and come together on laws, culture and land. It also talks about John Russ who was also a well known Cherokee leader like major Ridge, he fought against the federal government to allow the Cherokee nation to stay in Georgia instead of moving to Oklahoma and leave everything they had built as a tribe.…
Overall, Stretten’s argument is only effective in making people aware of her feelings but not effective in representing the community. Because of her lack of credibility and overly hostile language towards the audience, Stretten does not persuade the audience to modify their outlook on Native American culture and how the audience “honor” this community.…
2b. The critique presented by Gould and Lewontin in the Spandrels paper describes the shortcomings of the adaptationist program that had been the predominant path of evolutionary thought for decades. Adaptationists see natural selection as the only and all-powerful force that can overcome any constraint to species' traits, and that evolution in turn relies exclusively on natural selection. In challenging this concept of adaptation, Gould and Lewontin are not denying the existence evolution by natural selection, but are interested in generating alternatives and other explanatory factors that are dismissed as unimportant or entirely ignored in the adaptationist program.…
