The works of three poets, namely; William Wordsworth, William Butler Yeats and Seamus Heaney shall be used to represent the transition in form of behavior and life of individuals and society in these eras.
Out of this traditional and apparently extremely slow unchanging pre-industrial life grew, surprisingly, the seeds of modern industry and society. The new towns were set apart from the old manor system in the countryside. The mood is cold, discontented, frustrated and lonely. Yeats was probably telling his readers the exact situation of all the soldiers fighting in the world wars, tired and wanting to go back home to their families.
The tone in “Follower” is admiring, annoyed, comforting and passionate. The mood is chipper, excited, hopeful and satisfied. Heaney shows his readers the thirst of proving oneself in this intense competitive environment of the modern era.
All in all, all three poems not only showed the readers the eras, the situations and the surroundings, they had the readers live them. With the peaceful and relaxed life of the pre-industrial era where a person had the time to reflect on his thoughts and ideas to a place in the war era where all hope was not only lost, but also destroyed. All the way in the future to the modern era showed us the reality of today; the reality of vicious ambitions.
