There are multiple ways to compare and contrast “An Invitation to a Murder” and “The Dying Detective”. Both Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Josh Pachter presented various examples of situational irony. Once revealed that the poison was actually medicine needed to sustain the life of Mr. Abbott, the plot was advanced; similarly, when Sherlock Holmes revealed that the illness he was experiencing was an act, the plot was advanced. Both major examples of situational irony being revealed were the climaxes of each respective story. Holmes planned his act so he could obtain a confession for the murder of Victor Savage from Mr. Culverton Smith; similarly, Mrs. Abbott planned to murder her husband, Mr. Abbott, the night that all the detectives were present.
