An invisible force, Carton applies his cunning to critical situations inconspicuously. He chooses to accomplish things with little acknowledgement, if any at all. For instance, Carton is directly responsible for Darnay’s acquittal in the first trial, yet he never receives nor seeks credit. During the trial, Carton slips Stryver a piece of paper that suggests he call attention to his and Darnay’s similar physical appearance in order to discredit a witness testifying against Darnay. Dickens later reveals that “nobody had made any acknowledgement of Mr. Carton’s part in the day’s proceedings” (Dickens 82), proving that Carton had successfully played a significant role while remaining invisible.
