The nurse spends most of the time with the patients than anyone else on the healthcare team. As a result, there are certain characteristics that are important in carrying out their duties. It is important that they have a professional identity which is “an image a person has based on the way they are able to perform within a career field” (Define professional identity, 2016). Additionally, they are employed in an organization which provides health care services to the public with through their skills and expertise. The organization involves them in stewardship; which is “skillful handling and management of tasks that are entrusted to them” (Define stewardship, 2016). defines professionalism as involving the right attitude for work, towards colleagues, and others with whom she makes contact. There is a value placed on work ethics and maintaining certain morals and strive to live by such standards. As a result, it influences her to act in a respectful manner to others and maintain current educational training and standards to perform her duties. It is important to remain competent, qualified, efficient, assertive and confident in knowing the work environment and the staff to maintain professionalism. She promotes a health principles and healthy living among the staff such as avoiding the use of substances or foods such as nicotine and coffee. It is believed that “coffee causes caffeine addition and sleep disturbance” (Gunnars, 2016). Staff members are constantly encouraged to remain current with their nursing practice, education, effectively utilizing the available resources to provide optimal patient care. C.C. creates an environment where they are able to share their ideas and experiences for learning purposes to improve the quality of patient care, achieve health and organizational goals.
Importance to exercise professional advocacy and authenticity
C.C. expressed that leaders should have professional advocacy and authenticity when working with colleagues. She reasons that to act contrary is an indication of exclusion to colleagues. Such attitudes are consistent with leaders whom seek to pursue their own interest and being autocratic will prevent others from making meaningful contributions and lead to frustration. Also, staff dissatisfaction, poor performance, non -compliance and high staff turn -over. Therefore, including their contributions will increase work attendance and produce happy staff members.
