Young Goodman Brown dreams the witch’s coven, but in his dream he is an active participant, experiencing it first hand. I believe this is a dream because Goodman Brown sees other townspeople, including his wife, walking in the woods to the meeting of the witches. Also, I believe he falls asleep in the woods before he meets the older man because he wakes up in the same place. It does make a difference in my interpretation of the story because it makes the events in the plot easier to understand, especially how demented the events sound. Hawthorne uses many symbols in the story, two of the most important being his wife, Faith and the woods. Faith symbolizes his belief in God and when he thinks he has lost her, he also loses some of his faith.
