I am an intern at Springwoods Behavioral Health and I was presented with a patient who suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder and depression. Tammy was brought to Springwoods by her boyfriend when she threatened his life as well as her own. The intake report states that Tammy was under the influence of alcohol when she began fighting with her boyfriend who had just returned home from work. Tammy grabbed a knife and made threatening statements and movements toward herself as well as her boyfriend. The situation deescalated and Tammy was convinced by her boyfriend to come to Springwoods for help. Upon reading her intake report and conducting my own biopsychosocial assessment with her, I find that Tammy is a twenty three year old female …show more content…

PHP is a two week program which runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. PHP is made up of four Dialectical Behavior Therapy focused group sessions per day, which covers all the individual domains: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Medication management by a Springwoods psychiatrist was also provided. Tammy completed the two week program and then began the step down program. More than three absences would have resulted in immediate dismissal from the program. Since there were no reported barriers to treatment and considering Tammy’s motivation to change, I did not foresee this as being a problem. An appointment was set up with a General Practitioner since the step down program does not include medication

Borderline Personality Disorder also referred to as BPD is a mental disorder where the control and regulation of impulsions, relationship stability and outlook on both life and oneself are negatively affected (Lieb, Zanarini, Schmahl, Linehan & Bohus, 2004). This becomes a challenge for individuals affected by it especially in terms of the social context in everyday life. But it has become apparent that the roots of this illness are sometimes brought on quite early in human development, even if the symptoms do not show until later. Almost 80% of individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) report a history of childhood abuse as a part of growing up in invalidating environments (Feigenbaum, 2007). Before clinicians can apply their…

Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, was developed in 1993 by Marsha M. Linehan as a treatment for clients meeting the criteria for borderline personality disorder who are chronically suicidal (Linehan and Chen, 2004). Linehan developed this therapy out of the sentiment that there was an influx in borderline personality disorder diagnoses, and no successful treatment options specific to this diagnosis (Linehan, 1993). Linehan was influenced by behavior therapy and by Eastern mindfulness. The theory assumes that the DBT clinician is at a certain level of acceptance towards their client’s current distress (Linehan and Chen, 2004).…
