Introduction

The past seven weeks I have experienced at UCT have played a role towards my becoming an integrated health professional. I have learnt how the three dimensions of the IHP diagram, identified by Olckers, Gibbs and Duncan (2007: 1) as Empathy, Knowledge and Reflection, all contribute to this journey. In this essay I will draw on two impactful events that have aided me in the three dimensions mentioned above through my thoughts and feelings prior, during and after the respective events. I will link these events with IHP diagram and identify how each has helped me in my journey to becoming an integrated health professional.

I previously thought SPBL to be invaluable and tedious and often felt tired and irritated before the lesson began. However as the weeks progressed and the workload increased ,I have begun to see the importance and benefits that it provides. In terms of my current thoughts and feelings towards SPBL, I feel less stressed as it offers a summary on the units but also a workspace where discussion and perspective sharing takes place. SPBL has showed me the importance of group participation in many ways. Group participation is important as if offers a variety of perspectives that is often useful as I unfortunately become very stuck in my ways. Group participation is also important as it reflects the importance of group conversation and …show more content…
I see SPBL as an extension of ‘life long learning’ (Olckers, Gibbs, Duncan, 2007: 2) as it aids me in drawing upon my prior knowledge, offering ‘modern methods of learning’ and encourages me to disprove myths and generate academic supported facts, that were suggested by Olckers, Gibbs and Duncan (2007:2). SPBL has made more aware of the people within my group. I am now around people from very different homes, social statuses, religious affiliations and political values. This has made me become more aware and empathetic in how I make statements in a morally manner without coming off as condescending or indifferent. For example, one SPBL lesson we were discussing the role of religion in a household. As we have Christian, Hindu, Tamil and Muslim members, I had to be carefully make sure that I did not make a comment that may have been construed as offensive. At the same time I am very thankful that I have a diverse group as I am able to learn more and continually become more empathetic to different spectra of people. The final IHP dimension that SPBL has influenced is the reflective dimension. After SPBL I reflect to see how I interacted with my group and try to improve for the next week. I constantly try to see how my behavior affects the group. For example if I speak too much, I’ll try to give the other

Through reflecting on your experience of working with/caring for a patient or client as a student nurse, explore what integration might mean for your future working practice as a registered nurse, and the care of individuals (patients/clients) in the future. Integration is an integral part of how different agencies, including the national health service (NHS), provide the highest quality of care for patients. Integration of health and social care can be described as finding new ways to organise care which will stop the duplication of care given and help to provide more preventative care (National Evaluation of the Department of Health’s Integrated Care Pilots 2012). A big part of integration is interagency working, also known as multi-professional…

I will be self-reflecting my physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual development using the medicine wheel as described by Mussell (2005). Mussell defines the medicine wheel as, “a symbol used to represent the dynamic system of mind, body, emotions and spirit, and the needs related to each of these aspects that must be met for the development of human potential.” (Mussell, 2005, p.115). Self-reflection of the four aspects of the medicine wheel (Mussell, 2005) will help me to gain a better self-understanding and insight.…

Final Level/Program Reflection I began the nursing program with very minimal nursing knowledge. Throughout the curriculum, I learned the fundamental skills of being a nurse, but my learning went further than skills. The greatest accomplishment I will take away from this program is an improved understanding of what nursing is: facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering, protection and promotion of health, and advocacy for patients, families, and communities. This idea has been discussed numerous times throughout the curriculum, and as I approach graduation, I finally appreciate the meaning of "what is nursing.…

Instructors should incorporate learning across the health fields in an academic setting, so incoming health professionals have the ability to correctly utilize each other as a resource. Inter-professional training will assist health teams working cohesively together as a unit, instead of separate units working only working on the same patient. By working as a unit, all of the skills that are presented from each health care professional becomes a resource that will be used in an appropriate manner. Also, inter-professional training builds respect for their job, perspectives, and array of abilities.…

IPE Reflection and Evaluation Over the past few weeks we have been working on learning about interprofessional education, or IPE. Within these training modules, there were four main topics that were discussed, known as the IPEC competency domains; values/ethics, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teamwork/team-based care. All four of these domains are parts, making up one larger goal. This goal is to train future medical professionals to work together more fluidly, resulting in statistically fewer errors and higher success rates of care in hospitals and other settings. On top of briefly discussing what the four IPEC competency domains are, I will also be revealing the two most important IPE skills that I have learned…

Whether you are a part of a social group or on a group project for school or work everyone has the want and need to be included, when group members don’t feel like they have fully been accepted in to the group they can become withdrawn and anti-social which would lead them to not be a contributing part of the team. Having a diverse group of people on a team can help a team more effectively and efficiently reach their common goal. If everyone on the team had the exact same life experiences, was the same age and the same culture they more than likely would have the same general way to approach the group’s common goal. Having diversity on the team can help generate more ideas because everyone’s life experiences and cultural differences have helped form the way they think and the way that they solve problems. Roles, needs and diversity affect a group’s teamwork immensely because if members aren’t performing their specific goal and only focusing on a self-centered role the groups work will either multiply for the other members of the group or the group’s common goal might not be met.…
