Most Influential Teacher Essay

As soon as I knew that I had to write about the most influential teacher of my career as a student, I knew exactly who to write about. Nobody else has taught me so much in such a short time as one class period per day. Ever since sixth grade, I have found not only a passionate teacher but a role model in the person that I wish to honor with this award. For everything he has done for me, the least I can do to repay him for his kindness is to tell him how much he truly means to me and to hundreds of other students. I have never met anyone as dedicated and patient as Mr. Wright. When I first met Mr. Wright, I had no idea what to expect. I had just entered sixth grade, barely five feet tall, and afraid of everything. Van Buren Middle School felt so unfamiliar to me and I was convinced I would never feel right walking through those halls. But when I entered the orchestra room for the first time, I felt right at home. The large windows let in sunlight that shone on the cellos and basses that lined the walls. Mr. Wright’s presence filled the room, guiding every child through the process …show more content…
There are mornings when I dread going to school, knowing the expectations that weigh heavily on my shoulders. But this year, the first class everyday is orchestra and I know that I will get to see Mr. Wright. His caffeine fueled morning energy and words of greeting are enough to make me smile throughout the day. He has such enthusiasm for life and passion for teaching that it spills over into everyone that he meets. Even on the hardest mornings, he can smile and put his students first. Being in his class teaches me more than just shifting technique and playing with dynamics. He teaches all of us how to remain optimistic and to stay true to ourselves by encouraging us in everything that we do. Despite the anxieties that school throws my way, I smile knowing that simply by trying my best, I am making Mr. Wright

When I entered the education landscape, I was foreign to the ideas and the nature of those that saw themselves as something more than just a student. I never thought that those students that sat behind the deteriorating desks could educate themselves. Ergo, as I transferred from middle school to high school, I began to discover those students that were seen as insignificant if I wanted to succeed within what was previously taught to me as the “real world”. Yet, it was through those encounters with those strange and unique individuals where I was exposed to something pure. I remember the first time I was ever exposed to music as an educational structure for me to discover myself in.…

It was the second week middle school when my band teacher had asked for me to stay after class: “Rachel you should think about quitting the band.” At that moment, I had felt my mind go blank; I was devastated. I had always known I was a bit behind in learning the notes and developing the sound of my tone; however, I had never once thought about quitting band. I loved music; just turning on the radio brightened my mood. I felt impatient in my other classes, waiting until I could go and pick up my instrument.…

"Good better best, never let it rest, 'till your good is better and your better is best." These simple words were spoken to me by my high school band director Cheldon Williams on the first day of my high school experience. This, followed by my experience of marching band and my eventual learning of piano sparked a period of introspective thought, and mental growth, that transcended to where I am today. Never in my life did I think my hard work and dedication inspired by Mr. Williams words would land me at Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts Boarding School. These words became a core part of what I am, and from freshman year on would encourage me to never set a limit on my potential, and my overall worth.…

I was raised on the border between three small towns just south of San Antonio. In my early childhood, I was convinced that my life would mirror that of my parents: graduation, marriage, and children. That sounded like a fine idea to me. Though as I grew bigger, so did my ambitions. Stuck in a world where the arts was represented mostly by a tiny high school marching band, I found a love for music and theatre.…
