On an individual level, the purpose for education is for people to have better job prospects than he or she would have with just a high school diploma. With better job prospects, a person might also have also have better job security. Essentially, pursuing higher education allows an individual to move up in status in their society. Educated people will then be able to contribute their newly learned skills to better the society. With these purposes for the individual, and the benefits to society, in mind, certain subjects should be taught to individuals in order to prepare them for reaching these goals after they graduate. Through the offering of professional development courses, a liberal arts education and omitting some unnecessary requirements (like physical education) to free up space for more beneficial courses, students would be benefitted and this purpose of higher education would be achieved. …show more content…
A syllabus from Oregon State University with a course titled “Professional Development”, reveals many course topics that are related to the purpose of higher education, as described above (Martin 1). Some topics the course covered was how to create a resume, how to communicate professionally in various ways, how to network, how to answer interview questions and determining what skills and strengths a student has (Martin 1). These topics are unique in that a class in Psychology or Calculus is not likely to teach a student how to prepare for a job interview. Yes, the student will have new skills that may be appropriate for that specific job, but the student will also need to be able showcase these skills.
