Cinderella and the prince are not truly happy, they are frozen, iced over, “dolls in a museum case” (103), who are never bothered by anything. The book began being published in real time, but were then frozen at the age of twelve and six for the rest of the books existence. (Keeline). The poem ends with a final “that story” (109), which is much more ominous and foreboding than the others. This happily ever after is more lifeless than it is happy. Sexton truly flipped this fairy tale around on its head.. Happiness all the time is not freedom, it’s more like a life sentence. No author is better celebrated in the fairytale world today than the Grimm brothers, whose publication of countless preexisting fairytales marked the fairytale genres transition from storytelling into literary text. Recognized as the standard source upon which our societies knowledge of German folklore is based (The Reception of Grimm Fairy Tales), the final edition of their work published remains ever present an influence for both readers and collectors alike. Yet, the translation of their work that remains in publication and is praised by society today is not how they originally intended for their work to appear. When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their first edition of a two-volume set of German fairytales titled “Children and Household Tales” in 1812, they didn’t shy from intensifying the gore and sexual intrigue that the stories they collected already exhibited. Originally voiced in a manor that would teach critical lessons and pass on cultural values and wisdom to younger generations, fairytales were crafted into dark and impressive stories meant to frighten children into compliance (Societies Influence on Grimms Fairytales).…

Toys and clothes could be considered more purposeful way to engender children, but sometimes there are actions that parents do without even knowing towards their children. Cinderella had a fairy godmother in Perrault version, while she had a dead mother in form of a magic tree in the Grimms’ version. In Perrault version, the king invited all the young girls in the kingdom to the ball and in the Grimm’s brother’s version, the king invited all of the young girls to a festival for his son to be able to choose a bride. In Perrault version, Cinderella’s fairy godmother made all her dreams come true, turning huge a rat into a fat coachman with “the finest mustache and whiskers ever seen”, mice into fine horses in “beautiful mouse-colored dapple gray”, lizards into a carriage, and her rags turned into cloth of gold and silver all decked with jewels. In the Grimm version, Cinderella had to lay on her mother’s grave beneath the hazel-tree and cry to her mother before the birds threw down a “gold and silver dress and slipper embroidered with silk and silver”. In the Perrault version, when the two stepsisters tried the slipper on and it didn’t fit them perfectly, they were disappointed.…
