Can a common ground be achieved? Religion is a system of beliefs, practice, and worship of a supernatural power such as a god, goddess, or multiple gods. Religion, giving people hope, protection, and a sense of understanding is supposed to bring people together yet divides nations more and more everyday. Thus, believers of one religion claim to be more superior than another. Is there one true religion? The idea of becoming equal failed after wars, and the deaths that followed. One true religion is impossible to obtain due to the compromises that would have to be made and the common ground that is not found. Henry VIII of England is not only known for ruling a country but for going against the pope’s words and divorcing from his first wife. This then led to a separation of The Roman Catholic Church and Church of England. Later in history, Abraham Lincoln says, “When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That 's my religion,” simply sharing what he thinks is the morally right way to live. There is no need for a God to tell you right from wrong, when we all have a conscience. Students across the nation have studied, praised, and even looked up to, these men had strong opinions about religion when religion has always played a factor in politics and nations. America itself was built on a colony that left England to escape the religion they refused to follow and believe in. John Winthrop, a leading figure, claimed to see “the city upon a hill,” meaning this country, that colony, would be an example of religious tolerance. There is no such thing as “one true religion” and it will never be achieved while we live in the land of a variety of cultures, religions, and …show more content…
With roughly thousands of religions in the world, there is no superior religion. It is not only rude to cancel out other religions and act as if they do not matter, it is selfish and arrogant. There is a balance needed in the world, and there needs an imbalance to add character to our everyday life. Without curiosity and debate, America wouldn’t have been founded, theories would not have been summoned, and people would not have dared to question themselves. Religion, sometimes being a battle within nations and people, is a lesson to all. It is a lesson to teach us as individuals where we want to be, what we have to do, and what is okay while some things are not okay. If we were to claim a true religion, others would argue against that, find that disrespectful, and choose to ignore it. A common ground is already existed, as in, we live everyday with people who do not believe the same as another. Society must accept the fact that there is a time and place for everything, and religion is one subject for another time. The world has managed to continue to revolve after wars, unity, murders, and births, only to show us that there is no need to argue over something that will never be answered. There is no one true religion. There is no one correct way to live. There is no

“The Godless Constitution” illustrates how the Constitution created a secular state. The author states an argument upon the idea of “separation and church”. The argument relates to the point that the creation of a godless constitution was not an act of irreverence, rather it was an act of confidence in religion. The founders of this nation wanted to regard the mixing and politics. Therefore, government matters is not neutral in religious and moral matters.…

Think about the times before education became mandatory for everyone, the times before there were laws that everyone had to abide by, the times before people became indulged with technology and the times before the people were able to practice their religion freely. One of the first religious groups to come to America was the Puritans. The Puritans came to America to escape persecution from England because they weren't able to practice their religion freely. It was ironic was the Puritans came to America to be free to practice their own religion, but they didn't let anyone else come with them if they didn’t want to practice the same religion as them.…

According to the french philosophe, Voltaire, nations with a huge variety of religions are the best, because all the people work together (Document B). Voltaire's book, Letters Concerning the English Nation states, ”If one religion only were allowed in England, the Government would very possibly become arbitrary; if there were but two, the people would cut one another’s throats; but as there are such a multitude, they all live happy and in peace.” (Document B). In other words he means that if there was religion that religion would have control over everything. And if there were two religions, the religions would be constantly at war.…

The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment in the Constitution explicitly lays out the relationship between religion and government: any government body within our borders cannot implement a ‘national’ religion (SP#3). This clause drives diversity and tolerance and sustainability for all people - to an extent- (SP#4A).…

Former U.S Secretary of State Madeline Albright suspected this and proposed a brilliant idea of “Harnessing unifying potential of faith, while containing the capacity to divide” (35) in her essay Faith and Diplomacy. She argued that diplomats should develop a clear understanding of where and when global conflicts are caused by religion and use that knowledge to ease the disagreements among members of global community. This understanding can significantly improve the way countries communicate with each other, since the root of any religious faith is the “moral compass,” the 14th Dalai Lama was referring to. Moral compass is an intrinsic guideline that serves as a basis of ethical reasoning. Even though people might be sharing different religious perspectives, the core values that any religion advocates are the same - they are justice, humility and kinship.…

In fact, “the founding fathers often disagreed, even fought bitterly, about every step [they took] to achieve independence, nationhood, and constitutional government” (40). Not all of them shared the same religion. Some were Protestant and some were Catholics and deists, but they managed to get past those issues for the good of our country. They also shared different opinions on Enlightenment. Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Rush “saw it as a welcome chance for the radical act of uprooting oppressive ways of all kinds” (36).…

According to the Scholastic Children’s Dictionary, the definition of freedom is “ The right to do and say what you like.” In America, everyone is given the freedom of speech, religion, petitioning, assembly, and press. Debates have been going on for the last few years whether or not citizens are really given all of these freedoms. In my opinion, the statement that all Americans are “free,” is not true. America today, pressured by political correctness and social acceptances, has been reduced to become a country where we are more concerned about hurting people’s feelings or protecting our reputations. This mindset has caused America, the country where we used to be able to say what we want-- when we want-- how we want, to become a country overrun by what would sound better than what would be more effective. Our own government has trampled our rights as citizens under free speech, the right to bear arms, and the freedom of religion. We are becoming a society where one thing is absolutely right and anyone who thinks different is condemned a homophobe, racist, extremist, or terrorist. Our Reconstructionist officials (liberals/government activists)…

Christians living in America today are often told about how depraved society can be, and how the world is falling apart. Some remain lukewarm and apathetic while others do their part to try and improve the world. Still others have become bitter towards secularism, believing that the problems in this country stem from a lack of institutional religiosity. Many of these people proclaim that America would be a better place if only schools led prayer and taught the creation story. Yet these people seem to ignore the how it has been proven time and time again that religion and government never mix well, and in the case of the United States they have never really mixed that much at all.…
