Courage is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty (“Courage”). An individual with true courage will not stand down from danger or anything that threatens him or herself or other people. It comes with responsibility and willingness to do whatever is needed to help others. An example of this could be anything from going off to the military and fight to protect the people of your country, to confronting problems with relationships between you and another individual. Courage is the power to confront anything unnerving that would cause any anguish to yourself or others.
However it is not the same as confidence or fearless. Confidence is the ability to look someone in the eye or to be sure in what you mean. Where as courage is where you would fight for someone or do something that you wouldn’t do unless you had to. Someone can be confident and still not have courage. He was born in Pall Mall, tennessee. Living by the Wolf River, he started hunting on it and became an expert marksman. Meanwhile, dropped out of school to go work in his dad's blacksmith shop. He developed a reputation of drinking and getting into fights. In 1917 he was given a draft notice. His strong religious beliefs caused him to attempt exemption, but his plea was not granted (“Commentary on Alvin C. York”). While on a mission in the Argonne Forest, Alvin was assigned to take down one of the german armies machine gun bases. While meandering through the forest behind enemy lines his squadron was attacked by machine gun fire and lost half of their men. The entire squadron took up defensive positions (“Alvin York” 9 Aug.
