Heather,
I think you gave some great examples in your post, your math example was a great example. I agree with you the article by Landry, “On Truth” had some great points and helpful points of views. I think at times we can become overwhelmed by so much opinions being wrapped around a topic, it can become difficult to break done the truth of what really is the reality of a situation. This article sadly, made me think of my grandma because she is the only mom I have had for the last ten years and now that she has reached a point in her life where her health has really put a huge effect to her abilities. I have had to really face the reality and facts to how close I am at looking at losing my grandma, it truly scares me deeply because my heart

Matthew Spalding’s We Still Hold These Truths: Rediscovering our Principles, Reclaiming Our Future, tackles the top ten principles that define America: liberty, equality, natural rights, consent of the governed, private property, the rule of law, constitutionalism, self-government, and independence. He breaks down the ten principles which our founding fathers set as a base for our country. However, over time America’s values have changed and our main goals such as equality, constitutionalism, and independence according to Spalding it needs to be relooked upon.…

What is the most humanistic instinct that differentiates humans from animals? Debating and sharing ideas should be set to elevate us from other lifeforms and let us evolve. In Deborah Tannen’s article titled “For Argument’s Sake; Why Do We Feel Compelled to Fight About Everything?” the audience is treated after reading to one simple never-ending questions stating whether arguing is pivotal in convincing a certain stance. She explains that we won't accomplish with just arguing, but she does see the need for it in some circumstances. Deborah Tannen states many scenarios and stories where it showcases that arguing is not always the correct thing, and certainly not the most effective way to find results.…

In the ninth chapter of his novel Why the Allies Won by Richard Overy breaks down how the moral and spiritual beliefs of the individual nations might have played a role in the effectiveness of their strategies. He proposes that citizens will “fight with less effect in the service of an evil cause.” In response to this hypothesis, I believe that the author has made a sound argument. While not a blanket statement, it is easy to see how the motivations of Axis armies were reflective of the views held by its nation, and consequently how those beliefs affect the treatment of its constituents. Looking at the views of the Axis powers, the primary figureheads of Germany and Japan were driven by a view of ethnic superiority, while the Allied powers had hatred of Hitler as a “moral cement.”…

I refrain from making hasty decisions, a trait that’s made it easier to manage time and keep my life organized. It’s not that I don’t enjoy some spontaneity, just that I’ve had experience with faulty planning. I like to consider as many details and possible outcomes of a situation before making a decision; in fact, I believe it’s my best characteristic. Thinking things through allows me to make sound, satisfying choices in both my academic and social life. It is a practice that has saved me from careless mistakes on math tests and kept my activities.…

Mistakes are inevitable, we all make them. Some of the biggest mistakes we make are when we have a lack of discernment. This lack of discernment is due to our inability to critical think. Dr. Gerald Nosich, a professor in the field of critical thinking, wrote the book: “Learning To Think Things Through: a guide to critical thinking across the curriculum.” In regard to critical thinking, Nosich states: “Two conditions are necessary for critical thinking.…

Rhetorical Reflection My Think Piece focused specifically on Martha Nussbaum’s article on the educational crisis that is rising because of the decrease in value of the Liberal Arts. First of all, because this was more of a personal response I used informal language. Since I am addressing a specific article I included examples from the text to support my argument that she is not persuasive. I also used the quotations to reinforce the points that I do agree with.…

Tobias Wolff’s “The Liar” from his collection of short stories entitled Our Story Begins tells the story of James, a teenage pathological liar who, after the death of his father, begins to fabricate gruesome stories about his life. James’ mother, Margaret, a devout Christian who is disturbed by her son’s constant lying, relies on the assistance of both God and the family physician to help “cure” him. Wolff structures this story tactfully, revealing significant information in a way that seems natural and deliberate. He drops the reader into the story with very little background information about the characters, gradually revealing key information about their pre-existing lives as the story progresses. Through the use of small details, Wolff…

One of the main points of the Knowledge Argument is that one can have all of the physical information without having all of the information there is to have. Frank Jackson believes that this applies to any of the senses, such as sight, “taste, hearing, the bodily sensations and generally speaking for the various mental states which are said to have (as it is variously put) raw feels, phenomenal features or qualia” (130). To support this argument he gave examples of a man named Fred who could see two colors where we could only see one color and a woman named Mary who knew everything about color but had never experienced it. A Physicalist believes that there is nothing more to this world than the physical, but Jackson proves this wrong with…

    Ethos, Pathos, And Logos

Bleh, locking down a clear understanding of ethos, pathos, and logos took a significant amount of time and research. Being able to apply this concept to a paper I found to be even more difficult especially in clarifying ethos and logos. In my mind, I over simplified the two concepts to ethos equaling credibility and logos to mean the accuracy of the information, but in my research, this was not always the case. In a basic Google search of rhetoric and web design, many sources stated that logos was the layout and ease of use of a website. The ethos, on the other hand, was how "professional" the website looked.…

The topic of free speech on college campuses currently has been a huge hot button issue in the media, especially in the United States. The controversy this topic brings is deeply rooted in the history of not only higher education, but in the history of the development of this country. Often people are all for freedom of speech, until someone speaks out against them (as a person) or one of their core beliefs. In an effort to give full disclosure here, I believe that I should state that directly after I completed my undergraduate degree I did apply and got into Law School. While I decided not to attend Law School, I do believe that the courses I took on Pre-Law and Constitutional Law had a profound impact on my beliefs.…

Teaching controversial issues in the classroom through discussion is the most beneficial method for students to learn about these matters because it teaches them how to be open-minded, think critically about their own beliefs, and forces them to master their public speaking and interpersonal skills. The benefits of using discussions in classrooms to teach contentious topics are endless but the three previously mentioned have proven to be the most valuable by students, teachers, and parents everywhere. Class discussions force students to listen, embrace, and be respectful of opinions and beliefs that are divergent to their own. As mentioned by David Bridges (1979), an author who has formerly analyzed the notion of discussion, the sharing of…

Death is final with no point of return and extremely painful for the ones left behind to grieve. This was especially true for me when I lost my mother. Losing her was one of the most difficulty experiences in my life because I was not prepared for her death. I knew her health was not the best; however, the diagnosed health problems were not what killed her.…
