Involuntary memory arises into our everyday life without our physical or mental control so we just hold on tight or wreck our brain trying to forget until the feeling has past. The fact that we can go back into time with a simple sense is beyond our mental capacity and is something that can often be bitter sweet. A sense that has brought me back on multiple occasions is the sense of smell. Ever since I could remember my mom would get up every single day, just like clock-work at 6 a.m. to brew herself a cup of coffee. She believed that she was incapable of functioning without her morning coffee, my mom was so addicted that if she ever woke up late then she would take it on the go. I remember waking up to the smell of coffee or sitting in my mother’s vehicle with the scent of coffee overwhelming the backseat. Each class required an insane amount of attention but I wanted to do the absolute best of my capability so I told myself to stay awake until I knew all the material. When I was studying for finals I was in a condensed study room and nearly lost my mind, there was pile after pile of study guides and notecards surrounding me. The thought of throwing everything to the floor and just walking out swam across my mind more than once. Therefore, I was pleading for sleep and my brain was in a whirl when I saw a group of girls with steam coming out of their cups sitting down in a table through the study hall’s glass door. Meanwhile, I looked around at the other young adults studying and they too had the cups of what appeared to be coffee. At this point, all I can think to myself was maybe as college came around and all-nighters became a thing, it is morally acceptable to find myself slamming down coffee as if it would magically give me an A. Then, I realized that despite my anti-coffee ritual I made myself in high school that it just may do the trick to keep me awake. At this point, I was ready to do anything to keep me awake so I headed to the coffee maker to make a cup.
