An Example Of Civil Disobedience

Civil disobedience is a much more common thing than people realize. The peaceful, non-violent methods, of resisting laws positively impact free societies. If people did not stand up for what they believed in, we would be living in a communist country. For example, if Rosa Parks would have moved out of the bus seat for a white male, the issue of segregation may still be in place today. A famous quote by Rosa Parks shows that she was not scared to stand up for what she believed in, "You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right" (Korpe). Another example would be Martin Luther King Jr. and his Letter from a Birmingham Jail. He defied the law in a long letter that is a huge example of civil disobedience. He means that how the African Americans were treated, was a threat not just to them but a threat everywhere all around the world. Another quote by the King was, "Too long has our beloved Southland been bogged down in a tragic effort to live in monologue rather than dialogue" (Dinar). By saying this he is meaning that only white individuals had their say about things and he believed it was time that African Americans also have a say. A more recent example of civil disobedience would include a story from 2013 where Saudi Arabian women were defying authorities over a female driving ban (Jamjoom). These women all decided on a day and they all drove to prove that they were upset about this new ban. Another more recent example of civil disobedience would be this year in 2017. When the inauguration for Donald Trump to become president took place, women and men went marching in cities and standing at planned parenthood places all around the United States (Przybyla).
