The two most frequent responses I elicit from individuals who hear of my plans to pursue a career in medicine are either: “I can see why a medical career might be attractive, but you’ve got an excellent job, and do you really wish to jeopardize that?” or: “what is wrong with what you do now?”. My typical response to this is that they are right and that I do not want to jeopardize my job nor is there anything wrong with it. Moreover, my performance appraisals of the last couple of years indicate that I am very good at my job. The problem is that somewhere on my journey I have lost my passion. How is this possible you ask? How can you be good at your job without being passionate? Well, for me it comes down to an ethos of stewardship. It does

My experiences, academic background and personality are three key aspects of my life that make the medical field a preference and a particularly suitable field for me. My interest in medicine was first sparked when I volunteered at CentraState Medical Center working with geriatric patients. To further explore this interest, I joined the First Aid Squad in my town. Riding on ambulances and volunteering at the squad provided much-needed insight into the field and taught me valuable skills, such as patient care and effective communication. After completing a four-month intensive EMT course and state exam, I can proudly say that I am now a New Jersey certified EMT.…

I eventually chose what I thought would be a good stable career simply because it would be a financially good choice but it never seemed like something I could stick with or love. I discounted anything from the medical field because everyone was going there and I didn't want to be a lost number of people rushing to the same career, I wanted to be a little different.…

During my last year of college I interned as a dolphin trainer, tortoise conservationist, medical laboratory technician and none of them sparking my interest until a doctor asked me to shadow him. I always thought interacting with people was something I would not be interested in at all, but it took someone else to see something inside of me that not even I thought I had. Working a full-time job throughout my college career in customer service for a pest control company made me believe I did not want a career interacting with people face-to-face. Nevertheless, that first day of shadowing Dr. Bezard, I knew that helping people, making someone smile and making even just one person’s day a little bit better is all I need to fulfill my happiness in a career. I feel that not only does working in the medical field require vast knowledge, but it also requires the ability to be able to relate to people and not judge.…

Between babysitting and my job at Toys R Us, I constantly find myself around children. As I’ve been told by teachers and band directors, I know I must act as an example so these kids strive for greatness. Rather than give into my inner demons and walk away from such opportunity, I give advice and direction to curious children who approach me. It’s a surreal moment when I tell children that although school isn’t the most pleasant or easy, it’s definitely worth all the stress and pain to be able to look back at end the school year and appreciate all of one’s accomplishments. I certainly remember this when I’m in marching band and find myself exhausted and struggling to stay motivated throughout the endless rehearsals.…

I have a passion for the science of medicine and for providing care. While it was initially my interest in science and biology that prompted me to enter college as a pre-medical student, my experiences volunteering in the medical field have strengthened my conviction to become a doctor and have shown me how rewarding the field of medicine is. I have worked in clinics as well as emergency rooms and have observed doctors and patients in both settings. I have seen how through the help of a caring doctor, patient’s become at ease and how a patient doctor relationship can become a strong bond that lasts for many years. The doctors that I have worked with have inspired me in my career goals and I believe that medicine is the right career path for…
