A 40-year-old female, diagnosed with polyhydramnios late in her second pregnancy, delivers a baby girl vaginally with no vacuum or forceps assistance. As a nurse, what must one know to determine care for such a patient? What assessments, nursing diagnoses, and interventions may be relevant for this patient? The purpose of this paper is to better understand polyhydramnios and implications for patient care. Current research will be highlighted briefly. Finally, a case study will be explored and nursing care for the above mentioned patient will be discussed.

(2013) conducted an observational study aimed to compare outcomes of 50 mothers with polyhydramnios and 50 mothers with typical amniotic fluid volume. The researchers found statistically significant higher occurrences of preterm premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, and malpresentation in women with polyhydramnios. Twice as many women with polyhydramnios delivered by cesarean section than women without. Other postpartum complications that were more significant for women with polyhydramnios in the study included postpartum hemorrhage and placental abruption. In this study, severity of the polyhydramnios was also taken into account. The researchers found more complications with mild polyhydramnios (Saralaya, Vijaya, Mithra, Saralaya, & Rao, 2013). However, distribution across severity levels varied and is likely a contributing factor to this finding. This study perfectly illustrates the prevalence of potential complications related to …show more content…
The patient is a 40-year-old female at a gestation of 38 weeks and 5 days. She is a G3P1 at time of admission for the expected birth of her second child. Patient was diagnosed with polyhydramnios late in third trimester. Patient has previous history of polyhydramnios during her previous pregnancy resulting in bed rest and preterm labor of son. Patient stated difficulty with latch during breastfeeding of her first child resulting in the discontinuation of breastfeeding with infant. As indicated previously, preterm labor is a complication of polyhydramnios that may result in feeding
