Without adequate planning the structure crumbles and organisational objectives cannot be achieved. According to Kerridge (2012) nurses have to take leading roles in sustaining and managing change. Therefore, in order to lead the change, the author sought the assistance of the unit manager to discuss the project further as supported by (Gage, 2013). Additionally, Royal College of Nursing (RCN) (2007) states that cultural change is generally effective when led by the most senior person and supported by the rests. In fostering effective communication, the unit administrator sent e-mails to all staff inviting them to attend a meeting with the agenda displayed on the notice board. According to Robinson and Potts (2014) it is highly prevalent among people who suffer from mental illness and is exacerbated by health inequalities. It costs the NHS approximately £720 million a year to treat smoking related diseases in sufferers of mental disorders. In additional, it increases the risk of mental health problem and suicide amongst mental health patients (Malone et al, 2003). Conversely, following cessation, patients’ anxiety levels are reduced and mood significantly improved including their physical health as stated by Parrott (2006), Robson and Potts (2014). To facilitate patient awareness, the team liaised with the smoking cessation lead to organise a session for the patients. Sullivan and Decker (2009) advocates for patient involvement and this was fostered through regular updates from community meetings, posters were developed and displayed on the ward specifying the date, time venue and speakers of the session. Similar updates were sent to staffs through emails, mentioned during staff handover, meetings with minutes recorded by the ward
