Personal Narrative: The Realities Of My College Life

Improved Essays
I experienced two big realities at the start of my college experience, both can be described as disappointing and surprising. I had heard rumors of what to expect out of college from my friends, what was portrayed in entertainment media such as YouTube, Facebook, or just general TV shows. Two of my expectations from college did not turn out as anticipated. I had the impression college would be more social than what I was lead to believe, as well as the intense academic difference from high school. As I worked through my first semester, I became aware of how college is more academically challenging and not as fun and social as high school. Notably, I anticipated college would be as socially active as high school, if not more. During my last …show more content…
“You will form some of your best connections there, with so many people; who could become your friends for the rest of your life” my brother 's words were more convincing than anything I had seen from TV. At the time I thought of TV shows much like a rumor; I took it lightly with an open mind. They were showing a vibrant and lively event with smiles and fun around a college campus. In high school it felt as active as a carnival or Disneyland with life all around. The cafeteria aroma flowing out around the courtyard of my high school, filling one 's nostrils, gave me the feeling of being at a carnival. The busy, active kids always passing by chatting, laughing, and socializing, like the crowds of people at Disneyland. When my first semester of college rolled in, it conflicted with my assumptions from high school. At college, it felt like everyone would be like a magic trick with a twist “Now you see me? My two main college assumptions turned up to be false, but was not task I could not handle. For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

College is the best four years of your life, they say. As I entered my freshman year of college, it was filled with a variety of emotions and uncertainty. Moving 6 hours away from my hometown, in a completely unknown environment, and not knowing a single sole was the hardest thing i’ve ever gone through. The first weeks of college was a culture shock to say the least. I was exposed to so much more then I thought I would.…

One of the main functions of higher education is networking. The state you live in can determine if you move onto higher education. Some states offer much more affordable college education than others, which contributes to the state’s impact on its student’s education choices. Community college often allows students to reach their associates degree, and sometimes their bachelors. Sometimes community college experiences can discourage students from entering a four-year program.…

In contrast to my elementary school years, where I would mostly spend time alone and not interacting with others, I have met some very amazing people who share the same interests I do and are genuinely eager to talk with me and befriend me. Rather than seem to only want to be with me for a few hours because I am near them, the people I have befriended are the kind of people you could seek out if you are feeling upset or to simply have a nice conversation with. I can not say this about a few of my acquaintances I had back in elementary school. It is because everyone here is older and more mature than before, and definitely less likely to commit childish, rude actions. I have not been overly distracted in any of my classes.…

First-generation college students, defined as those students whose parents have no more than a high school education (Pascarella et al., 2004), tend to have lower graduation rates than their non-first generation peers (Stebleton & Soria, ) and are twice as likely to leave 4-year institutions before the second year (Bringle, Hatcher, & Muthiah, 2010). In fact, almost half (43%) of first-generation students entering college leave before completing their degree as compared to 20% of other students (Chen & Carroll, 2005). Even when first-generation college students persist beyond 3 years, they are less likely to earn bachelor’s degrees than their peers (Pascarella et al., 2004) and less likely to enroll in graduate degree programs (Hahs-Vaughn, 2004). Additionally, Vaughan, Parra, & Lalonde (2014) found first-generation students often come from low-income families and ethnically diverse backgrounds typically underrepresented in higher education, for which the statistics on retention and graduation are even worse: only 11% finish a…

No matter how many movies you watch, no matter how many stories you read, and no matter how many questions you ask, college is never what you expect it to be; especially if you are not going away to a four-year school. All throughout their high school years, teens dream about moving away, gaining an independence, and maybe even joining Greek life. When I decided to go to a community college senior year of high school, I felt a variety of emotions. Sadness was the most prevalent emotion. I chose to go to a community college because I was paying for college on my own (as so many college students do).…
