An Epilogue To My Hero

On January 27th, 2014, I saw an old lady getting mugged. The perfect start to your classic boy/girl scout hero story. Or any hero story, really. Anyway, I saw the guy go up to the old lady and try to take her purse. I jumped in quickly before anyone got hurt.
“Why are you taking this nice lady’s purse?” I asked, stepping between them and ripping the purse out of the man’s hand. “What’s the point, anyway? Sure you might get a few dollars here and there, maybe some nice jewelry, but that’s not gonna make you as much as you could get with a job.”
“I don’t need your advice, kid.” The man snarled, grabbing for the purse. I handed it to the old lady and she ran away.
“You also don’t need my fist in your face.” I said, raising it threateningly. “Scram.”

I sighed. Oh well; I tried. Just as I was about to go back home, a man in a suit approached me.
“I’ve been watching you, and you have the characteristics we desire. Please, come with me.” He said.
“Why?” I asked.
“You can help us. We need someone who can protect people.” The man said.
“What are you with, Secret Service or something?”
“No. I am a representative of Malitia, a non-profit group that tries its best to help people who need helping. Come with me. I promise you will be safe.”
I followed him, though warily.
As he led me to wherever Malitia wanted me to be, the man told me what in the world was going on.
“My name is Gavin Perez, and I am one of the agents that Malitia sent out to find a new Protector.” Gavin said.
“Protector?” I asked,

Back then, I never would’ve thought for a second that it could be anything else. I trusted him.
He guided me into what felt and sounded like a car, or perhaps a limo, and helped me sit down. The ride seemed to last hours, but it really only took about thirty minutes.
The car stopped and I was helped out.
When Gavin finally took the blindfold off, I was standing right outside the biggest building I had ever seen.
“Whoa.” I said, amazed at the size and shape of the place.
“I know, right? You’ll feel right at home here, Iris. Let me show you around.” He said, walking briskly through the odd doorway.
I followed behind, wondering what the inside would look like. The door closed behind us with a click.
The building was shaped like a bunch of claws, scratching at the air.

The interior was just like the outside; complicated and creepy.
“Why is the building designed like this?” I asked, gaping at all the corners, crevices, and designs on the walls and ceiling.
“To confuse trespassers. Malitia is like a maze, you’ll soon discover. It’s quite easy to remember how to get places after a while, though. You will be given a map soon, just in case.” Gavin

The sound of footsteps going down the creaky wooden staircase echoed through the strangely silent house of the Tristessens. Between the walls, pestilence and death hung in the air like a thick smog, choking everyone inside. The only disturbance to the stagnant, silent atmosphere was the occasional cough rattling through the lungs of the man, Galen, who seemed much older than he was, and his children moving about the house to care for him. “Jackson, could you please get me the water? Bring it up here--quickly” Jillian called to her brother in a voice barely louder than a whisper.…

Thinking, nothing more to do there, Agent Powell pivoted to leave the balcony and the apartment: There was nothing of value there apart from some paintings and a few sculptures Dr. Cord had handpicked. However, to his surprise Roger Nelson’s figure was in the doorway like an apparition in the hallway of the apartment; perhaps with the intended silence for effect and to observe Agent Powell at work. “You! How long have you been standing there,” Agent Powell said both annoyed and surprised. “You have an uncanny way of showing up where I am.”…

Police lights, sirens and news vans lined the street, just another day on the job I thought. Pulling into the scene I flash my badge at some of the local cops on the scene as I am escorted to the body. As I got closer I instantly recognised the body, it was Russel Owston head of the biggest bikie gang in Melbourne. Looking at the deep bullet holes from a pistol in his stomach I think to myself that this is most likely a gang shooting.…

Ever since Salvatore's Bar & Grill opened its doors, Stefan Salvatore always felt that he was more serious about the business than his partner and older brother Damon.
