An Ember In The Ashes Honor Theme

Honor is a great thing that can drive us to do great things, as we can see in the novel “ An Ember In The Ashes” by Sabaa Tahir. In this novel there are two main characters, Elias and Laia. Elias is a martial soldier trained at Blackcliff , soon to become a mask , a highly trained killer and law enforcer that works for the empire, but he deeply wishes he could escape the empire, believing that their values and beliefs are wrong and cruel, he dreams of escaping and one day being free of the empire. Laia is a scholar girl who loses her grandparents and brother in a martial raid. Her Nan and Pop are murdered and her brother is taken by a mask, to be locked up in a prison where he will be tortured and killed.In hopes of saving her brother Laia seeks the …show more content…
Honor. There are two main types of honor, honoring someone else, respecting them through their beliefs and actions , each person honors someone else based on their own beliefs , if someone shares similar beliefs as them they are likely to honor that person, and honoring yourself. Honoring yourself is when you honor your own beliefs and ideas despite society's attempt to alter them, honoring yourself is doing what is best for you in your life despite how it will affect others. In “ An Ember In The Ashes” there is a mixture of self honor and honor for others. Elias is driven by self honor, doing what he believes is right, despite the harsh views of the society around him.He hates the views of those around him and believes they are sickening and cruel and wrong, Elias is mostly driven by his hatred for the empire. Laia, is partially driven by self honor, but mainly honor for her family ,which she was taught to have as she was raised. Her motivation is to save her brother, and she will do anything to accomplish that goal because of her deep honor and respect for her brother with whom she
