They may take a few detours, but they’re never lost.” ~ Unknown ~ An Ember in the Ashes, by Sabaa Tahir is an adventure that takes the main character, Laia, through countless challenges in an effort to rescue her beloved brother from the treacherous empire. This experience required absolute persistence with Laia’s blood, sweat, and tears. Throughout this story, the three P.R.I.D.E traits that describe Laia are determination, integrity, and excellence.
The first P.R.I.D.E trait that Laia conveys is determination. Determination is a quality that makes you continue trying to do or achieve something that is difficult. During the novel, Laia’s brother, Darin, is captured by the empire and taken to a prison where he is to be executed in the future. Therefore, Laia is desperate to rescue Darin, no matter what the cost, so she adventures into the catacombs to search for support. “You won’t stop until you do. Excellence is the quality of being outstanding or extremely good. During the adventure, Laia concocts a plan at Blackcliff to save her friends from certain death, while also finding help for her brother. Therefore, in order for this plan to succeed, Laia’s timing must be flawless with absolutely no mistakes. Eventually, her plan was executed perfectly. “‘The timing,’ Cook said last night, ‘has to be perfect... No matter what happens, you have to wait for the signal. When you see it, move. Not a moment sooner. Not a moment later.’... Blackcliff is pure havoc. More than I could have hoped for. It's perfect.” (Tahir 434, 435) This excerpt shows Laia’s excellence because the timing of her plan must be exact, and she succeeded.
