I cannot tell you exactly why I have such intense drive to innovate, but I can tell you about formative situations and feelings I’ve faced since arriving in the United States. It was September 2000, a year before the terror attacks on 9/11, when my Iraqi family of 5 immigrated to Phoenix, Arizona. We arrived refugees, left only with $50 after the inescapable bribing of Middle Eastern officials. During childhood , I became accustomed to frugality, which lead to harnessing a mind for improvement. I remember once feeling left out from an activity in 2nd grade because the teacher had no more supplies for a paper wagon with predetermined foldable areas marked by dotted lines. I felt proud when I quickly traced the dotted lines onto a blank sheet of paper to be able to join in.

From the integrative programming of an electronic election polling system for my high school to live broadcasting study sessions with my general chemistry professor, Dr. John Pollard, I find solace in improving my surroundings, and most importantly myself. My first introduction to medicine was a National Youth Leadership Forum, 10 days of exposure at UCLA. I cannot say that Medicine became my strict path on the 11th day.
