How To Be An Effective Leader in Today’s World What is a leader? According to a television broadcaster Donald McGannon, “Leadership is action, not position.” He defines leadership in one simple word—action. Many people do not have the motivation or the will to be leaders. However, there are a few who are willing to be leaders because they want to be one. Leaders are not created; they are developed. Although there are traits and qualities, it is actions that help people become leaders. Leaders learn from those being led how to become a leader. Becoming a leader is a lifelong process. There are many different types of leaders and they all work together for a common goal, which is changing the world. One example is a spiritual leader. According to Oswald Sanders, “spiritual leadership blends natural and spiritual qualities” (Sanders 28). A spiritual leader must rely on the Holy Spirit to give them wisdom and through the Holy Spirit, they can influence people. Spiritual leaders’ goals are to bring people to salvation. They believe that if people are saved, they will experience peace and will spend eternity in Heaven. Another type of leaders is school leaders. According to Robert Marzano, school leaders can determine if a student’s academic success increases or decreases. If there is no motivation from leaders, students tend to fall behind and become lazy. With strong encouragement from leaders, students can strive to reach their goal and succeed. Leaders in school must exercise discipline, affirmation and understanding of culture. An effective leader builds a “culture that positively influences teachers” and in turn, “positively influence students” (Marzano 47). All leaders share a common goal. They want the best for the people. To become an effective leader, a person must have a goal in mind and work together with people to reach that

An effective leader is the first one to get up and the last one to eat and the last one to bed. A true leader is someone who doesn’t undertake the strenuous job of leading for the glory and admiration, but for the sense of joy and accomplishment his team feels afterward. Through my experiences with Venture Crew, a co-ed branch of the Boy Scouts, I have learned firsthand the definition of servant leadership; putting your groups’ wellbeing over your own benefit. Leaders shouldn’t bark orders or only oversee the work, leaders need to work with their team and pitch in to help reach the goal. When I was as NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training), I learned how to cultivate my ability to be a leader; you have to listen to everyone in the group in order to find common ground to help facilitate the group’s actions.…

Some people think leaders are born with a trait that innately makes them leaders, while others theorize that it is a characteristic of an individual, but we have learned that leaders are a product of their development and life experiences.
