OBJECTIVE #1 – The different phases of migraine headache
• The prodrome phase may be experienced several hours or days in advance and a warning sign can be represented by the migaineur’s “yellow light” (Health Central, 2016).
• The aura phase appears about an hour before the headache occurs and is associated with changes in vision, difficulty focusing, numbness in extremities, difficulties speaking, complications interpreting words and muscle weakness (Health Monitor, 2014).
• The attack phase develops when the headache strikes and can last for several hours or days. The headache is associated many symptoms including a mild or severe throbbing or pulsing pain, sensitivity to light or sounds, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, light-headedness

• Routine laboratory studies are also performed which can included a CBC, electrolytes and a urinalysis (Medical-Surgical Nursing In Canada, 2014).
• A CT scan of the sinuses and special studies (CT scan, angiography, EMG, EEG, MRA, MRI, lumbar puncture) may also be performed (Medical-Surgical Nursing In Canada, 2014).
OBJECTIVE #3 – The different types of pain management available to treat migraine (abortive vs 
preventative) 


• Preventative mechanisms are used to decrease the occurrence and severity of migraine attacks with the use of beta-blockers, antidepressants, antihistamines and anti-seizure medications (EMedicine Health, 2015).
• Abortive medications are used to prevent a migraine attack or stop it once it has already started where triptans are only used to treat headache pain by targeting serotonin (EMedicine Health, 2015).

• Sumatriptan is an ergot alkaloid prescribed for acute treatment of migraine with/without aura and cluster headaches (Nursing Drug Reference, 2017).
• Common adverse reactions of the CNS due to the use of sumatriptan include sensations of tingling, hot/burning, cold, tightness, numbness, dizziness and fatigue (Nursing Drug Reference, 2017).
• Adverse reactions of sumatriptan include abdominal discomfort, muscle weakness, neck stiffness, myalgia, chest tightness, throat & nasal discomfort, vision changes, and hypo/hypertension (Nursing Drug Reference, 2017).
