• Preventative mechanisms are used to decrease the occurrence and severity of migraine attacks with the use of beta-blockers, antidepressants, antihistamines and anti-seizure medications (EMedicine Health, 2015).
• Abortive medications are used to prevent a migraine attack or stop it once it has already started where triptans are only used to treat headache pain by targeting serotonin (EMedicine Health, 2015).
