In Michael Pollan’s book “An Eater’s Manifesto” Pollan gave us many different nutritional theories behind the large number of diseases that troubled those who eat a “Western Diet”. However, Pollan disagrees with these theories and states that both the food and health industries are partially to blame for this. Pollan claims the food industry is to blame because they use these different nutritional theories to release new products, and that the health industry is to blame because they use these theories to develop new prescriptions and treatment methods and they work with the food industry to help them with their studies. Many food critics accentuate to people that we as people need to avoid processed foods at whatever costs it maybe, but they fail to realize that not all processed foods are bad. There are many processed foods that people consume on everyday basis that are, in fact, healthy. In today’s society it is particularly hard to escape the culture of processed foods. People are becoming habituated to the suitability and cost factor, which is why we need to let people know the meaning of processed food is, food that has been altered in some way to where it is not in its normal state. There are many healthy foods that fall under the category of processed foods. Yet all processed foods are depicted as sickening and unhealthy by many people. Certain foods, such as milk that has been treated, are considered to be a processed food. Sure, you can drink raw milk fresh from the cow, but without pasteurization you are more exposed to illnesses. It has been scientifically proven that if you were to package and freeze vegetables, that they will keep most of their vitamins and minerals. However, because they are packaged, they are deemed as processed. Technology plays in a big part of processed foods because manufacturers are able to add vitamins and minerals to certain foods, making them beneficial to the customers and make it easier to handle how much goes in the food. There are many different foods that are considered processed. A few of them, in fact are better processed than unprocessed. However, a higher amount of processed foods are ones that need to be eaten less instead of eating a lot of it. When processing companies start adding high concentrates of sodium, sugar, trans-fats, and preservatives to our food, this is when we need to ration how much of it we eat. For instance
