Are Students Waste Of Time?

Rebecca Schuman, a columnist for slate.com, wrote an article that required essays in colleges are nothing but a waste of time for both the teacher and students. The student will either find a way to have the paper written for them, plagiarize the whole paper, borrow the paper, or not even do it. While the teachers have to spend countless hours reading each and every single paper, correcting, rereading, fixing mistakes, and adding comments; all things that students probably will not care about one bit. So the teacher is really wasting the classes time by assigning something that only students who really care about will do. Sometimes, this can cause a major issue for the student, it could cause them to overthink the paper way more than they really have to. Sometimes a simple yes or no, and defense of the answer is enough; other times, a well thought out, elaborate answer is required. If the student does not care about the topic enough, an elaborate answer may not be very easy and would stress the student out. A person should have an opinion on important topics anyways. They should be able to stand for and defend the things they think are right and wrong. A paper is an amazing way to do so. It gives a student complete control. They can say anything that they want to as long as they can back it up. A student is in charge of everything, it is like a debate except that the writer has complete control over every detail that could be thought of or argued. Students can have these “debates” about topics that they do not care about and they can be right with no one saying that they are wrong. If a paper or essay is an optional thing for schools and students, this will leave the students with time to do things other than their homework. Writing papers and essays show a student’s dedication towards their education. If their paper or essay is well constructed, and in on-time, it shows that a student cares about their grade and wants the best grade possible. If they turn in a bad paper and it is late and not very well written, that student probably waited till the last minute and rushed to do their assignment not caring about the grade they got. As is, there are paper writing services out on the internet that you can buy a paper off of for any topic and at any length. Students already try that, and if they do not want to pay someone, they might have someone else write it for them in exchange for food or help in another class, they might even borrow them from another student who had already taken and passed the class. If there is a way around a paper or essay, a lazy student or one that does not care about their grade will try it to see if it works for them; and if not, they will try something else or just not turn the assignment
