Permissible Weaponry On September 8, 2014, it was reported that Kent Williams, the Vice Principal of Tevis Jr. High, located in Bakersfield, California, had been caught with a loaded pistol on school grounds. He was taken away in handcuffs by the Bakersfield Police. He had a concealed weapons permit and had presented it before his arrest. Since Williams had a permit with him at the time of arrest, it was considered an illegal arrest. Williams “is preparing to file a government claim against the Bakersfield Police Department” focusing on violation of civil rights, false arrest, and false imprisonment (Christian, 2014). Williams’ rights were limited because he did not meet all of the criteria in order to carry a concealed weapon on school grounds.

Also, since the mass shooting in Connecticut, more people from California want fewer restrictions on gun laws in order to protect themselves (Herdt, 2013, para.1). Even though the public wants less restriction, it is best for the children’s safety that there is not any kind of weapon on campus. In addition to that, schools have different ways of protecting themselves.

Schools are usually very well protected. If someone is a visitor, he/ she must sign in and out through the office. These visitors must wear badges to signify that they are only visitors. The office holds records of who is allowed to take children home and sign them out of school. There are also gates surrounding the school so that people do not just come and go as they please. Schools also practice lock-down drills so that if the school is alerted of a trespasser, the students and teachers all know how to treat the situation.
