Becoming a United States Army Officer is no easy task. There are many obstacles and hardships that one may come across in order to become an Army Officer. So, why do I want to be an Army Officer?
The first reason I want to become an Army Officer is because I want to be part of something bigger than myself. Growing up, I always played sports so was always on a team. I was always part of something “bigger than myself.” Being in the Army is like being part of a team, just on a much larger scale, with much more meaning. First, an officer must be willing to show selfless service. You may be a leader, but the best leaders serve their subordinates first. This is the foundation attribute to any good leader. Second, I think an Army Officer must have empathy and be approachable. You must be able to put yourself in situations of others. Many times, you will have soldiers come to you with issues that you have never faced. As an officer, it is your job to be there for that soldier no matter the issue. Soldiers also must be able to trust their leaders. If subordinates cannot trust their leaders, then that leader has ultimately failed and if the leader has failed, then many times the mission fails. Lastly, leaders must be willing to learn. Especially as a junior officer, there will be so much to learn. If he or she is not willing to learn, then failure is inevitable. Higher-grade officers must also be willing to learn. The day that a soldier stops wanting to learn and is not willing to learn is the day that the career for that soldier is over. The Army has no need for stagnant leaders. A quality that many people do not think of but could possibly be the most important long-term quality is having the ability to inspire. As a leader, you will have many people looking up to you. You must be inspirational to your subordinates. You should want to be the leader that your subordinates look back on and
