This was because Marlin's other children were taken from him by a barracuda along with his wife. Marlin is constantly worried for Nemo's safety and always fears that Nemo will be in danger as he has a negative outlook on life. Throughout the movie, an archetypal quest shapes a new outlook on life for Marlin. Nemo was reluctantly allowed to go to school by his dad. Ever since he has been an overprotective parent fearing that Nemo can’t fend for himself because he has a deformed fin. In the film specifically, Marlin yells “No, it's not okay. You shouldn't be anywhere near here. Okay, I was right. You'll start school in a year or two.” He says this to try to protect Nemo. Even though Nemo has a deformed fin and can’t swim too well that doesn't mean he can’t at least try to go to school like a normal child. Marlin is scared that Nemo will be harmed out in the archetype of the ocean which is a representative of a very scary place with many dangers. He has let his fear of the unknown consume him so much that he won't even let his son live a normal life. The only way that he would be able to conquer this fear is by seeing he was wrong. Dory tells Marlin that he is wrong to be so hesitant and that this is the only way to figure out where they are headed. Marlin then glances back at Dory’s wound which was a result of Marlin not listening to her. He decides she's right and they carry on. They end up getting eaten on accident and they are left swimming around in the inside of the whale. First Marlin and Dory are talking about what the plan is and Marlin says “I promised him I'd never let anything happen to him.” Dory replies “Huh. That's a funny thing to promise.” Marlin inquiries “What?” and then Dory explains to Marlin that “Well, you can't never let anything happen to him. Then nothing would ever happen to him. Not much fun for little Harpo.” This taught Marlin that if he overprotects Nemo he'll never be able to do things he wants and to live his own life to the fullest. With this newfound knowledge and enlightenment, Marlin is hopeful again but the water in the Whale starts to diminish leading to the stomach. As the whale pushes back the last of the water Marlin and Dory are hanging onto the tongue. Marlin still fearful of the unknown is holding on for dear life while Dory carelessly lets's go.
