She is the author of five poetry collections. She served as director/co director of the Campbell Poetry Prize. She is a professor at Hofstra University. She is now sixty three years old.The civil rights movement began in 1954, the year she was born. This poem could have been influenced by the time period that she was living in. She uses a very clear form of imagery in this poem as she states “Odor of metal faint, persistent.” You can taste and smell the metal that makes the poem more interesting.
