In the short story,“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving, Katrina Van Tassel must choose a husband. I, Ichabod Crane am the one Katrina should marry. Katrina deserves a husband who supports the family with a well paid job and a great love for children. I am a school master and I am highly respected by the pupils I teach and their family. I believe the golden rule, spare the rod and spoil the child is a very important one to follow for “[I] was not one of those cruel rulers of the school, however [I] didn’t enjoy causing [my] subjects pain.” My position as School Master is “Thought to be inferior of learning only to the local preachers.” Though I earn enough with my teaching, I also help out a Singing Master, only one of my many

Books do more than just tell stories; they have the power to inspire, educate, and transform lives. For fifty-six years, Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning To Kill a Mockingbird has been an influential social commentary on prejudice in the deep south. Controversial at its inception for its progressive attitude towards civil rights, the novel has since become a staple in classrooms around the world for its message of equality and compassion. Elie Wiesel’s Night is a powerful narrative of his own experiences as a teenaged Jew during the second world war. The slim volume shocks readers with an unflinching representation of the horrors of the Holocaust and the resilience of the human spirit.…

Assuming Solomon Northup knew that the main audience would be northern white readers, I believe that his collaboration with editor David Wilson was a measure taken to ensure that the believability of his story could be bolstered by the aid of a white man’s insurance. Wilson offers preliminary notes for the reader, affirming that he accurately took down Northup’s dictations and pointing out that Northup’s story can be corroborated by public evidence. Wilson also offers his own endorsement of Northup and states his belief that the former slave “has adhered strictly to the truth.” As a precursor to what will follow, Wilson briefly identifies the setting of Northup’s tale in the “Pine Woods” and “Bayou Boeuf.…

After last week’s writing, I found myself in quite a fog of insecurity. Thankfully the most recent installment of YITE brought me back to the sunny side of teaching philosophy. Reading about the art of teaching was rather inspiring even. The quote from the text, “approaching instruction in a variety of ways to provide multiple paths for students to both learn the content and develop the skills of the curriculum is artistry (pg 147),” caught my attention. Often in my life I have gotten the impression that some people consider the position of a teacher as that of merely a figurehead, an adult to put in front of a group of kids to keep them occupied.…

As Steven Pinker said, “With violence, as so with many other concerns, human nature is the problem, but human nature is also the solution.” This demonstrates how human nature can both cause a problem and fix it. Schindler’s List showed that exact message as well. Oskar Schindler wanted to use all of the Jews as workers for him because he wanted to get rich. The Jews, in Schindler 's List were being killed and tortured by the Nazis, over time Oskar Schindler changed.…

The only definite thing in life is that it will one day end. That truth is perhaps the defining feature of the human condition. Mortality is inevitable act, so we can either accept it, or continue to deny the coming day of our own deaths. In Ambrose Bierce’s short story, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” the principal character, Peyton Farquhar, experiences both the denial and acceptance of his impending death. Farquhar is sentenced to be hanged by Union soldiers and as he faces his final moments, imagines his escape back to his family.…

During the Romantic period, many authors wrote of emotion and feeling. Love is the most well-known and over-used emotion. During the Romantic period, many authors wrote of love, Washington Irving and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow are some examples. In this essay, I will compare and contrast the courtship relationships expressed in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving and The Courtship of Miles Standish by Henry Longfellow. To Kill a Mockingbird is a great book showing how people can grow together. We have Scout and Jem growing up together in an innocent childhood growing into adulthood. We have Tom Robinson, an African American man who, is going to court with Atticus Finch (scouts father) and is trying to defend Tom against the harming white community. Tom Robinson was accused of rape of a white female Mayella. The raping of a white woman by a black man is similar to The Scottsboro Trial in 1933, where 9 black men were falsely accused of raping two white women.…
