Martin Luther King Jr, an article written by Cesar Chavez was published in a religious magazine, this article talks definitively about nonviolent resistance and it’s opposite, resistance through violence. Cesar Chavez reaches his point on nonviolence being the best possible way to succeed in protests by writing in a certain way that allows everyone to understand his points. His article also follows a compare and contrast structure between violence and nonviolence that leaves the audience with a feeling of certainty and he persuades the audience using a confident and appealing tone. He achieves this balance by inserting a paragraph regarding violence in the middle of a section on nonviolence. To demonstrate, the topic of the paragraphs immediately after the introduction are “nonviolence is more powerful” then “if we resort to violence then one of two things will happen” and finally he goes back and discusses how nonviolence is a more powerful method by starting the next paragraph with “nonviolence has exactly the opposite effect”. To accomplish such a direct tone, Chavez says things like, “violence will be escalated and there will be many injuries and perhaps deaths”. This sentence leaves the audience with all they need to know about violent resistance. His tone additionally ties into his simple diction, these two concepts play hand-in-hand in his article. His simple diction leads to a decisive and direct tone, this can be explained easily, the simpler words the simpler the point. The same mutually beneficial situation occurs when examining his direct tone, which causes a more basic diction because he doesn’t need complicated, high level, or challenging words when he knows exactly what he wants to say.
