“In the most essential way, she had failed him-seven times she had failed him-and now she was nothing but a burden to him” (Hosseini 99-100). Mariam is now useless to Rasheed because she cannot bear any children, and he now regards her as a nuisance. Before Rasheed knew Mariam could not bear children, he gave her presents and treated her kindly. But, when Mariam has seven miscarriages he starts to beat her for the smallest of reasons. Mariam knows she is not useful for Rasheed anymore because in Afghanistan a man’s reason for marrying a younger girl is so they will have more children and pass on the family lineage.…
kay, so now we know about timshel, but it's also Adam's last word before he dies (at least it wasn't something totally random like rosebud). He says it right after Lee gets him to give Cal his blessing, i.e. show that he loves him as a son and free him from the guilt of "killing" his brother. It's a moment where things are at a crossroads for Cal: he could go on hating himself for what he has done and thinking that his dad died hating his guts, or he can be free and go on to break the Cain-Abel curse that seems to follow the Trask family around. As Lee says to Adam, "Give him his chance"…
Each of the two stanzas has a different energy. In the first stanza, the eagle is very calm, ready to pounce, with a lot potential energy, sitting on the steep cliff. The author describes it as “Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.” In the second stanza the mood goes from calm to drastic, quickly. In the poem, lines 4 and 5, state “He watches from his mountain walls, And like a thunderbolt he falls.”…
In Just- Poetry Explication E.E. Cummings major approach to unfoalding the theme would be the use of diction. While many words in the poem are made up such as, “mud-lucsious”, this emphasizes how the speaker is excited that he or she has to put together words to describe the feeling they are having. Because of this use of word, the speaker could be portrayed as a child because during the spring time children often play in mud and enjoy themselves. Also, one can assume the speaker is a child by the way they describe their friends, “eddieandbill” and “bettyandisbel”.…
Hook. in E.ECummings poem “next to god of course america I” soldiers think they are fighting and later on be respected but the author writes otherwise, also in the story “The Deer at Providencia” Annie Dillard writes about a woman see a deer suffer, and later on in the story, compares it to a man who burned his face twice. E.E Cummings shows irony through the warriors and Annie Dillard shows irony through the Deer and Alan, and they both show irony in their situations with god. In Cummings poem, the warriors thin they are going to be respected as heroes, but the author writes otherwise. At the beginning of the poem he reads like one of those normal patriotic poems, then the mood quickly changes.…
Poets’ work shape their careers and are almost always influenced by their backgrounds or experiences that changed their lives. During high school, E.E. Cummings was educated in what was thought to be “the last generation to be educated in precisely this manner” (Docherty) of a “sound classical education” that resulted in him adopting many poetic strategies. E.E. Cummings then attended Harvard University where he was introduce to the avant-garde writers of Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. These two writers influenced Cummings in such a huge way that Cummings himself became an avant-garde writer too by experimenting with different techniques and grammar in his poetry. In his two poems “Spring is like a perhaps hand” and “maggie and milly and molly and may”, he experiments with very unique grammar and formatting.…
Almost everything we do is related to our own good. Living things, like us, no matter where we come from, or where we develop, try to survive one way or another. It is the one part of our nature we cannot change. Survival requires selfishness, but also intelligence, that does not make it wrong. In certain situations, like the ones we read in the articles, it’s better to think about yourself, trust your instincts and take full advantage of your abilities, than to hesitate worrying about someone else’s well-being and end in a catastrophe.…
In a terrific analogy David Marcum compares the systems of the ego to those of the human body, “To keep our body healthy, our immune system creates molecules called free radicals that fight viruses and bacteria. However, when environmental factors such as pollution and pesticides cause free radical production to become excessive, the molecules attack not only the viruses and bacteria but good cells and vital tissues as well, causing illness, premature aging, cancer and other diseases. Ego is a free radical.” (Page 9)…
“Another Elegy” is a poem about the relationships in life that happen. In the line “This is what our dying looks like..” gives us as a reader the feeling that we need to believe that when something bad happens, we need to just believe that something that is there. The poem “In the Time of Butterflies” written by an online user relates to the general plot of the book because of how it relates to a scene, represents the tone and gives an insight of the motives of most of the sisters. It is a clear representation of a lot of the elements found within the novel. One of the most important scenes in the novel is when Patria, one of sisters, overcomes her fears and joins the rebellion. The poem reflects this scene with a line in the poem, “to fight for our children's children for the ones you murdered.” The mentioning of children alludes to when Patria sees the young revolutionaries as her stillborn baby she lost.…
The Upon Wasp Chilled with Cold is a poem written by Edward Taylor, which is a self-reflective poem that seems to have come from his mind, when he observes the nature. Thus, despite his liaisons he always finds himself coming back to her. Yet, she is not content with this relationship. Her repetition of “I can do this” comes with a lack of sincerity. Just because she comes off as pure and sweet does not make it so. She clearly desires the man in the poem, she clearly disapproves of his womanizing.…

SeSe Nguyen LaChance Some changes are reversible, but others have consequences so irremediable that the past will cease to exist in any form but memories. With the looming presence of technology in today’s world, it is nearly impossible to evade its existence in everyday life. Although it is easy to dismiss the ramifications of technological advancements, lives have changed drastically, as well as interactions with the natural world. As illustrated by E.E Cummings’ poem “XIV,” more commonly known as “pity this busy monster manunkind,” mankind's’ relaxed approach to technology is escalating the situation. This increasing artificiality relinquishes humanity’s connections with the natural world, which will soon be discarded.…
In the stories “Black Swan Green” and “Letters to a Young Poet”, both the young poet and Jason are going through similar situations. Both of them want help on their poetry. The central idea is that both mentors want their mentee to look to themselves and ask, “Do I need writing to live?”. The mentors want their mentee to stop writing about cliche love poems and to start writing about what they know. The mentees need to be honest about writing and if it's what they want to do.…
