90% of serial killers are males, while a staggering 65% of victims tend to be women ("56 Interesting Facts About Serial Killers”). Serial killing, by definition, is someone who kills three or more people, but at separate times with a “cooling-down” period. These human slayers share a number of characteristics and differ from what is considered “normal” murder. Serial killers typically plan their deeds and are very organized in their crime (Frei, Andreas). The motives of a hedonist serial killer vary whether it may be lust, thrill, or comfort/profit. Looking closely at all hedonist killers, they tend to kill for some type of pleasure. For lust killers, sex is their primary motive. Lust killers typically use their hands as weapons because it requires close contact with the victim. An example of this type of serial killer is the notorious Ted Bundy, who terrorized women all over the country. Bundy deceived his victims by pretending to be injured and requesting help. The young women who did, paid a fatal price. After he killed his victims, he often would have sex with their corpses and even kept their heads as a sick keepsake to recollect the murder in his own time. Bundy finally confessed to murdering 30 young women and girls in a total of seven states (Howard, Dylan). Necrophilia (sexual intercourse with corpses), is often associated with lust killers as well as cannibalism (Bonn, Scott A “Hedonist Lust Killers”). Although she seemed sweet, her smile fooled many close to her. Nancy Ross (also known as Giggling Granny), murdered eleven people using a poison method, which is common with these serial killers. She killed four husbands, two children, her mother, two sisters, a grandson, and her nephew (Howard, Dylan). Comfort/profit killers are typically female and also tend to be close to their victims. Material gain is the primary motive of a hedonist comfort/profit killer. For the most part, comfort/profit killers are involved in other crimes like theft, fraud, nonpayment of debts, and embezzlement (Bonn, Scott A. "Some Serial Killers”).These killers wait for a period of times before killing another. Most females’ common motive is financial gain. They also tend to target victims that have a very little chance of fighting back (Harrison, Marissa A). Clearly, not all comfort/profit killers are women and some of the most famous have been men. For instance, H.H. Holmes, who gained his notoriety from murdering his victims, for their life insurance policy settlements, and related inheritance gains.
