Avoidance of Melinda at school and home. Melinda stays in her room all day to stay away from society. In the text, on Halloween Melinda’s parents tell her that she is too old to go trick or treating, and she stomps up to her room so she doesn’t have to admit that no one invited her to go trick or treating and so she can stay in her room and stay away from society. This proves that she wants to stay in her room because she doesn’t want to go outside and show herself to society and just stay inside and keep to herself. Melinda has no friends for the majority of the book. The text states that Melinda was trying to make eye contact with one of her old friends, but no one would look at her.
