Analysis Of Shell Shorts By Amber Bravo

One concept that stood out to me in the Technology theme is in the article called Shell Shorts by Amber Bravo it talks about learning the evolution of material and design of chairs. According to Amber Brown, Eames and Saarine made a plywood chair and started experimenting with molding the chair differently with curves and dimensions with the plywood ( Bravo par.2). They would construct and reconstruct the chairs mold with different dimensions, for example, 2D and 3D to see what style is more successful. As they have experimented with the different styles, in the article Bravo states that Eames and Saarine were influenced to enter in a “competition in 1940 had three-dimensional curves. For this they won first prize, but it was only produced in very limited numbers and not anywhere near to their desired quality” ( Bravo par 3). …show more content…
However, considering that plywood is hard to work with, they only made a few of great quality and wanted to experiment with other material. For Example, Bravo discusses that they used material like plastic reinforced with fiberglass and recyclable polypropylene. Like Bravo says in the article, this not only cut down the cost, but it also made chairs customizable and can easily be mass produced. This stood out to me because it was fascinating to me to see how they experimented with different material for the molds and started a evolution in the chair industry.
