Break Up in a Small Town Sam Hunt is a country music writer and singer that incorporates different types of music into his works. He was born and raised in Georgia, normal of many country singers to grow up in the south. He didn’t get into country music until after he was out of high school. He got inspiration from listening to different styles of music throughout his locker room encounters while playing college football at Middle University State University and The University of Alabama at Birmingham. The music inspired him to take a twist on the traditional country songs and add other genres to it.

He had hits like “Cop Car,” by Keith Urban, “Come Over,” by Kenny Chesney, and “We Are Tonight,” by Billy Currington. The critics thought of Sam Hunt as a leader who can step out of the spotlight. He’s either mindlessly following artless able executives or boldly paving his own way. Hunt has a way of attracting music lovers of all types by including country, pop, R&B, and hip-hop into his music. He says this draws new people in to his country style of music. Critics say his music is “definitively something else.” Hunt takes a dangerous route in the way he writes his music. He describes seeing her “at the red light beside me” (4), “pay at the same pumps” (7), and “run around with the same crowds” (10). He is constantly seeing her around town. She has a new boyfriend that he knows personally in his town, which makes him hurt more. “She would get down with somebody I know I guess that’s just how it goes when you break up in a small town” (16-18). It hurts worse when his ex is with somebody he knows because it gets personal. The town is so small he cannot go anywhere without seeing her. He can’t get away from her to get over her. “But there’s only so many streets, so many lights I swear it’s like I can’t even leave my house” (22-23). He needs to get away from her to not be sad. He uses a simile to describe how he feels in his own town. “But now it’s like these county lines closing in on me” (28). The metaphor she uses explains how he feels about his break up. “And it’s hitting a little too close to home” (30). He uses a hyperbole to describe how quickly she moved on from him, but he still isn’t over her. “She was over me before the grass few back where she used to park her car” (32).
