Rees, who is known for his life of intercession, grew up in Brynamman, Wales, and later moved to America to pursue wealth. While in America, he gave his life to Jesus. When he returned home to Wales, he started to work as a coal miner. The Welsh Revival started, and Rees had the opportunity to serve and take part in the meetings. Even though Rees was naturally a quieter, more reserved person, the Holy Spirit enabled him to share his story and encourage a thousand people. Because of man’s sinful nature, Rees tended to hold on to selfishness and greed. However, the Holy Spirit changed his heart, and Rees gave generously and selflessly of himself like Jesus did. The third reason that Rees should have given himself over to the Holy Spirit is that Rees gleaned countless truths and life lessons from God. When Rees came to the end of his money and resources, he trusted God and found that he had unlocked God’s never-ending bounty of resources. As he let the Holy Spirit lead him, Rees learned how to pray as an intercessor, taking the place of the ones he was praying for. God also taught him the secrets of intercession and how to prevail over the enemy. Some people think that Rees should not have given himself to the Holy Spirit. They say that the sacrifice was too great: he would have to let go of selfish ambition, his love of money, and the convenience and comfort of a normal life. Still, Rees knew that the rewards of giving himself to the Holy Spirit were far greater than the costs. Rees would not have any control over himself. Fleshly desires would have no place in his life, and he would not be able to live for self to any extent. However, giving up self was unto the Holy Spirit entering Rees’s body and dwelling in him. The sacrifices would be difficult, but in this way, the Holy Spirit could use him greatly to further the kingdom of heaven. Rees should have given himself over to the Holy Spirit, despite the sacrifices and the denying of self he would have to make. The things he gave up are only half of the story; God took away… Rees should have given himself over to the Holy Spirit because he had to fulfill his promise to God, the Holy Spirit transformed him to love others, and he gleaned truths from God. Rees’s story has impacted, encouraged, and provoked countless people in the Body of Christ, and if he had not made this simple decision, his story might not be so well known
