Raymond Carver was a contemporary short story writer who is often credited with reviving what was thought to be a dying literary form. In many of his works he often paralleled his own life with that of his characters. In his collection of short stories called Short Cuts there are many similarities between the characters and their lives and Carver himself.

Raymond Carver married young, at the age of eighteen, to Maryann Burk who was sixteen at the time. They had two kids together and each worked low paying jobs to support their family. Carver was an alcoholic and Maryann tended to be the breadwinner while he was in his drunken state. He wrote many of his stories while married to her. Perception is just one of the ways in which humans can attempt to understand all that we claim to know. Put simply, perception is defined as our entire understanding of things, including our opinions. The way we perceive our surroundings is swayed by several factors, including past experiences, common sense realism, bias, and even the context in which an event is to occur. Malcom Gladwell’s chapter concerning the Bronx shooting from his book Blink illustrates the idea that many factors - along with a common paradigm between the officers - can influence ones perception of reality.…

The short story “Whoever Is There, Come on Through” effectively conveys the importance of human connections both in real life and in good literature. I believe that being able to connect with a character is an important facet of the story to a reader, which makes it more relatable and enjoyable. This story was written recently, in January of 2018, which means that the author should fall in more with the most recent authors that we have read, trying to portray the people around him, like Bobbie Ann Mason, and trying to understand them, like the characters in “Sonny’s Blues”. Like Bobbie Ann Mason, Colin Barrett is portraying people that he has most likely interacted with before, people with mental illnesses or suffering from a bad stroke of luck in life, and like Mason it is his job to portray them successfully, without judgement and with appreciation.…

To Kill A Mockingbird and Places in the Heart were two different stories with one almost hidden meaning, a topic that interferes with all lives today. In both TKM and PITH, there is a reigning love of self for most of the stories, but in the end, the love of others overcomes and is victorious. With selfishness and racial prejudice being two main ideas that drive the stories along, it’s only fair to the reader or viewer that the strength of love and compassion wins. There is much conflict and pain along the way that makes these bittersweet endings just a little bit sweeter for the reader or viewer to contemplate and think over for themselves.…

In Raymond Carver’s short story Cathedral, he establishes an ignorant narrator, dependent on alcohol and fixated upon physical appearance. He juxtaposes the narrator to a blind man who feels emotion rather than sees it. Through indirect characterization and first person limited point of view, Carver foils the narcissistic narrator to the intuitive blind man while utilizing sight as a symbol of emotional understanding. He establishes the difference between looking and seeing to prove that sight is more than physical.…

“Little Things” written by Raymond Carver demonstrates how lost hope in a family develops regularly throughout the world today. This is significant, for Carver creates a short story with minimal usage of explanations to inform readers of how couples take the road to hell. You can describe his writing as an unspoken story; stories where much of the author’s writing is implied or understood without being spoken. Our minds take in information and create scenarios from his writing with what was never described. His story takes place one early day where the weather is beautiful, but as things become moody inside of an average American family home a couple decides that their relationship is not worth the effort.…
