Here some Yankees are trying to “buy” the horses off of Renny and Saranell. “ If you have horses, we need them, but we aim to buy them… We ain't stealing… We're offering 20 U.S. greenbacks for every horse.” (Carr 112) Now when first reading this readers think these Yankees aren't really stealing because they're “buying” the horses, but later it says how horses were previously bought for $600 and Saranell got majorly ripped off. Plus, at this time people could barely buy anything with the $40 they got. This easily showing how people didn't even flinch when it came to taking advantage of others. Here, in the book Night by Elie Wiesel, during the journey, a son killed his own father for a piece of bread. His father pleaded with him, saying he had some bread for him. It didn't matter, he was still killed. “One day when we had stopped, a worker took a piece of bread out of his bag and threw it into a wagon. There was a stampede. Dozens of starving men fought each other for a few crumbs. The German workman took a lively interest in this spectacle” (Wiesel 95). This showing how people, once again, went against each other without hesitation. Even in a different war, the same things were happening. Therefore, we readers see how, no matter the war, the darkness in people came out
